Can a non vegetarian person do a jatra?
Yes, a non‑vegetarian person can physically go for a Jain jatra/yatra (like Palitana, Sammed Shikharji, etc.), but there are some important points:
- Basic rule of tirth yatra
Jain tirth yatra is based on ahimsa and saiyam (non‑violence and self‑control). So even if someone normally eats non‑veg, during the days of jatra they should strictly follow: - Pure vegetarian food (ideally Jain veg – no eggs, no fish, etc.) - No alcohol, no addiction - As much simplicity, purity, and non‑violence as possible
- Why this is important
- Jatra is not a picnic; it is a spiritual sadhana. - If a person continues non‑veg during jatra, it goes directly against the Jain principle of अहिंसा and reduces the spiritual value of the yatra. - Many dharmashalas / bhojnalayas in tirthkshetras will not even allow non‑veg food inside their campus.
- What is ideal?
- Best: become fully vegetarian (and slowly move to Jain ahar) even in normal life. - Minimum: take a clear niyam (vow) that “from now till I return from jatra, I will be strictly vegetarian and avoid all himsak food and habits.” - Maintain good conduct: no anger, no abuse, modest dress, respect for temples and sadhus/sadhvijis.
So:
- Allowed: a non‑vegetarian person going on jatra.
- Expected: he/she should not remain non‑veg during the jatra period, and should try to change towards ahimsa permanently.
