    can i consume idli

    7 months ago 182

Yes, you can eat idli as a Jain – but only if it follows Jain food rules.

    Check these points:

    1. Ingredients

    - Allowed: Rice, urad dal, methi, salt, water, a little oil or ghee. - Not allowed: - Onion, garlic, hing with non-Jain processing, eggs, baking soda in excess (some strict Jains avoid it).

    1. Fermentation

    - Normal idli batter fermented for a few hours is generally accepted in both Shwetambar and Digambar traditions, as long as: - It is made fresh. - It is used within the same day. - It is kept clean and covered.

    1. Jain rules to take care of

    - Do not eat idli at night, as Jains avoid night-eating due to more chances of killing small living beings (micro-organisms, insects). - Prefer home-made idli so you can be sure: - No onion/garlic is used in chutney or sambar. - No eggs or non-Jain ingredients are mixed. - If eating outside, clearly ask: - “Is there onion or garlic in chutney/sambar?” - “Any egg or baking powder in batter?”

    1. Chutney and Sambar

    - Coconut chutney without onion/garlic is fine. - Many hotels add onion/garlic in chutney or sambar – that would not be Jain. - Best: Eat with pure Jain chutney or just ghee/podi made at home.

    So:

    • Plain idli with Jain ingredients, eaten in daytime, preferably made at home = allowed for Jains.
    • Be careful about chutney, sambar, and night-eating.
