Vastupal tejpal were Architect ?
Vastupal–Tejpal were not “architects” in the modern, technical sense.
They were:
- Jain Porwad (Pragvāt) brothers
- Powerful ministers under the Vaghel (Vaghela) rulers of Gujarat in the 13th century
- Great shravak (lay) devotees and patrons of Jain art and architecture
Their main fame is that they got the famous Luna Vasahi (Neminath) temple at Dilwara, Mount Abu constructed and financed. Because they initiated, guided and sponsored this magnificent temple, many people loosely call them the “architects” or “builders” of the temple.
In traditional Jain understanding:
- The detailed design and carving were done by master sthapatis (temple architects) and shilpakars (sculptors).
- Vastupal–Tejpal are honoured as mahā-dānī, great patrons and protectors of Jain Dharma, not as professional architects.
