Mata Marudevi is mainly known as the mother of the first Tirthankar, Bhagwan Rishabhdev (Adinath), and the wife of King Nabhiraj.
Below is her simple life-story as told in Jain tradition, especially Śvetāmbara texts:

1. Pious queen and the auspicious dreams
Marudevi was a very gentle, virtuous and religious queen.
When the soul of Bhagwan Rishabhdev entered her womb, she saw a series of very shubh (auspicious) dreams at night:
- Śvetāmbara tradition: 14 dreams
- Digambar tradition: 16 dreams
In the morning she told King Nabhiraj. With his special knowledge, he explained:
- “You will give birth to a great soul, who will show the true path of dharma to the world.”
Because of this, her womb was called very sacred, and she is respected as Jina-mātā (mother of a Jina).

2. Birth of Bhagwan Rishabhdev
On an extremely auspicious night, Marudevi gave birth to:
- a son – Rishabhdev (Adinath),
- and in some accounts, a twin daughter.
The atmosphere became peaceful and joyful; devas (heavenly beings) celebrated. This is described as one of the great Kalyāṇaks (holy events) of a Tirthankar.

3. Deep attachment to her son
As Rishabhdev grew up, married, ruled, and finally took dikshā (renunciation) to become a monk, Marudevi felt:
- very strong vātsalya (motherly love),
- but also viraha (pain of separation).
In Śvetāmbara stories, it is said that due to long crying and sorrow, her eyesight became weak in old age.

4. Rishabhdev attains Keval-jnān
After a long period of spiritual practice, Bhagwan Rishabhdev attained Keval-jnān (infinite knowledge).
Devas created a Samavasaraṇa – the divine preaching hall where all beings can come for his sermon.
King Bharata (her grandson) went to meet his grandmother Marudevi and told her:
- “Grandmother, your son has become a Kevali. Come, I will show you his greatness.”

5. The famous elephant-episode and her Moksha
(Śvetāmbara view)Bharata respectfully seated Mata Marudevi:
- on a decorated elephant,
- and slowly took her towards the Samavasaraṇa.
On the way, he described:
- the glory of Bhagwan Rishabhdev,
- the huge gathering of devas,
- the total detachment and peace of the Lord.
Listening to this, her heart filled with:
- intense devotion,
- deep respect,
- and a desire for true spiritual purity.
As they reached near, tears of joy came to her eyes. Her weak eyesight became clear, and she directly saw:
- her own son sitting as a Vitarāg Kevali (completely detached, without attachment even to mother).
At that very moment:
- She realized:
- “Even my own son, whom I love so much, is totally detached. Real happiness is only in becoming vitarāg, free from all attachment.”
- Her inner bhāva (thoughts) became extremely pure and focused on the soul.
- All remaining karmas were destroyed.
- She attained Keval-jnān, and in the very next moment Moksha,
while still sitting on the elephant.
Because of this, Śvetāmbara tradition says:
- Mata Marudevi was the first soul in this current time-cycle (avasarpiṇī) to attain Moksha.
- She attained Moksha without formal external dikshā, through complete inner renunciation.

7. Spiritual message from Mata Marudevi’s life
From her story, Jains learn:
- Even a householder, with very pure inner feelings, can rise extremely high.
- True devotion (bhakti) should lead to detachment, not more worldly desire.
- Relationships like mother–son are also temporary; only the soul is eternal.
- Liberation comes when all attachment (rāg–dveṣ) ends and pure atma-bhāva arises.
