Story of Chandan bala and role in Jainism

    7 months ago 221

Here is a simple, authentic Jain-dharma based explanation.

    Who was Chandanbala?

    • Chandanbala (also called Vasumati) was a princess of Champa, daughter of King Dadhivahan and Queen Dharini.
    • Due to war and circumstances, she was captured and later sold as a slave into the house of a rich merchant (Dhanavah/Dhanvah Sheth).
    • The merchant treated her like a daughter, but his jealous wife (often called Moola or Moola Shethani) tortured her, cut her hair, chained her feet and locked her in a cellar.

Even in all this suffering, Chandanbala remained gentle, forgiving, and deeply religious.

    ---

The famous incident with Bhagwan Mahavir

During his long period of sadhana, Bhagwan Mahavir had taken a special vow to accept alms (gochari) only when some very specific conditions were fulfilled (e.g. the donor’s state, inner purity, suffering, etc.). Because these conditions were not met, he remained fasting for a long time.

    One day:

    • Chandanbala, in chains, with shaven head, hungry for many days, received a little simple food (boiled black gram) in a winnowing basket.
    • Remembering her mother’s teachings of daan, she thought, “First I should give this to a deserving sadhu.”
    • Standing at the door, one foot inside and one outside, she saw Bhagwan Mahavir approaching and humbly offered the simple food with pure devotion.

At first, one of Mahavir’s conditions was still not complete (in many versions, the tears of heartfelt feeling were not yet there), so he moved ahead. When Chandanbala felt she had lost the chance to give daan, tears flowed from her eyes. She again requested him with deep bhav. Now all conditions were met, and Bhagwan Mahavir accepted alms from her hand.

At that very moment, according to Jain tradition, several things happened:

    • Her chains broke on their own.
    • Her true nobility was recognized; those who had harmed her felt regret.
    • She was freed from slavery.

Soon after accepting this alms, Bhagwan Mahavir’s spiritual journey progressed to the stage where he attained Keval Jnan (in many tellings, Chandanbala is called the “nimitt” – instrumental cause – for his Keval Jnan).

    ---

    What happened to Chandanbala later?

    • She was freed and given due honor.
    • She accepted diksha from Bhagwan Mahavir and became a Sadhvi.
    • She is regarded as the first head (pramukha) of the Jain nuns’ sangh – an ideal for all sadhvis.
    • Different Jain traditions differ on whether she herself attained Keval Jnan:
    - Some popular katha versions say she did attain Keval Jnan. - Many scholarly summaries state: scriptures do not clearly say she became a Kevali; she is mainly remembered as a great devotee and leader of nuns, not as a Tirthankar or Kevali.

Because of these differences, it is safest to say: She is a mahān śrāvikā / sadhvi and ideal devotee, not a Tirthankar.

    ---

Her role and importance in Jainism

    1. Nimitt for Mahavir’s Keval Jnan

Her pure-hearted ahār-daan is considered the turning point after which Mahavir soon attained Keval Jnan. So she is remembered each time we talk about that phase of Mahavir’s life.

    1. Ideal of Ahaar Daan (food charity)

    - She had almost nothing, yet gave with the purest intention. - This shows: value lies in bhav (inner feeling), not in the size or richness of the gift.

    1. Example of Kshamā (forgiveness) and Sahanshilta (tolerance)

    - Despite being sold, insulted, cut hair, chained and starved, she never took revenge or developed hatred. - She forgave those who wronged her and remained soft-hearted and religious.

    1. Ideal Jain woman and Sadhvi Pramukha

    - She combines qualities of a good shravika (faith, daan, modesty) and a great sadhvi (discipline, renunciation, leadership). - For Jain women and girls, stories of Chandanbala are often told to teach: - faith in dharma even in difficulty, - respect for sadhus–sadhvis, - importance of inner purity and patience.

    1. In practice and festivals

    - Her story is remembered in pravachans, pathshalas and during Paryushan and other fasting days. - Ahaar daan and service to sadhus–sadhvis are often explained using the example of Chandanbala.

Small note on Digambar / Shwetambar differences

    • Names and details:
    - Father’s name, king’s name attacking Champa, householder’s name, etc., may vary. - Some versions call her Vasumati initially, then Chandanbala after becoming a servant.
    • Keval Jnan:
    - Some katha traditions (in both paths) narrate her Keval Jnan; - Many scriptural-based summaries say only that she became sadhvi-pramukha and a great devotee.

But both Digambar and Shwetambar agree on the main spiritual message:

    • Chandanbala is a symbol of:
    - pure devotion, - compassion and forgiveness, - and the power of a small, sincere act of daan in the journey towards moksha.
