Jains make designs with rice because:

1. It is a scriptural vidhi (rule) in pooja

Before starting pooja or chaityavandan, our texts say to draw mangal chinha (auspicious symbols) with pure, unbroken rice grains in front of the Jina. This is called making gahuli / rice designs.

1. Rice is pure, non‑violent and nourishing

- It is clean and sattvik. - It is a symbol of prosperity and abundance. - After pooja, this rice can be given to people or used as food, so it is not wasted.

1. It creates bhakti and concentration

While slowly making the design, the mind becomes peaceful and focused on the Tirthankar. It is a simple way to prepare our mind for samayik, pooja, or prarthana.

What are these rice designs?

Most commonly, Jains draw:

1. Swastik (svastik)

- Made with rice in front of the idol. - Shows the four gatis (four destinies): human, celestial, tiryanch (animals/insects), and hellish beings. - Reminds us to put effort for moksha, not to roam in gati‑chakra.

1. Three heaps of rice above the swastik

- These three small piles represent: - Samyak Darshan – right faith - Samyak Jnan – right knowledge - Samyak Charitra – right conduct

1. A small crescent and dot on top (ardhachandra and bindu)

- The crescent shows the siddha‑shila (abode of liberated souls). - The dot shows the siddha, the liberated soul itself.

1. Ashtamangal – the 8 Auspicious Symbols (often also made with rice)

Our scriptures describe these 8 symbols to be drawn with unbroken rice before the Tirthankar:

1. Swastik – 4 destinies, auspiciousness 2. Shrivatsa – auspicious mark on the chest of Jina 3. Nandyavart – big complex swastik with many turns; symbol of different types of prosperity 4. Vardhamanak (Sharav) – dish/box shape; growth of punya, fame, and virtues 5. Bhadrasan (Sinhasan) – throne; seat sanctified by Jina’s feet 6. Kalash – full pot; symbol of purity, completeness, and auspiciousness 7. Minyugal – pair of fish; auspicious victory symbol 8. Darpan – mirror; reminds us to see our true self (soul)

Not everyone draws all eight; many people only make swastik + three heaps + crescent + dot as a simpler form of the same vidhi.
