In Jainism, the real doer (kartā) is the soul – jīva.

But this must be understood carefully:

1. Soul is the doer of:

- Its own thoughts (bhāva) – like anger, greed, attachment, compassion, forgiveness. - Its own karmic bondage – by these inner states it attracts and binds karma. - Its own progress or downfall – by right faith, right knowledge, right conduct, or by wrong beliefs and bad conduct.

So Jain scriptures say: “Ātmā hi kartā bhoktā” – the soul alone is doer and enjoyer (experiencer) of its karma. ( jainknowledge.com)

1. Body, mind, speech, external things are not independent doers

- They are instruments (like tools or machines). - The inner soul uses these tools. - Just as a driver is the real “doer” and the car is only an instrument, the soul is the driver, the body–mind are the vehicle.

1. Then why do we say ‘he did it’, ‘she did it’?

- In common language, we identify a person with the body and say “he did, she did”. - In Jain tattva-darshan (true view), the soul inside that body is the real doer of the bhāva (inner intention) and therefore of the karma.

1. Digambar and Śvetāmbara view

- Both agree: jīva is kartā-bhoktā – the doer and enjoyer of karma. - There is no difference in this basic principle; differences are in some other subtle doctrinal points, not in this.

So, in Jain Dharma:

• You, as a soul, are the doer of your own karma,
• and you alone will experience its result (pleasure or pain) in this life or future lives.
