Is Going to temple Important. If i do not go to temple, am i a less of a jain?
In Jainism, what matters most is your bhāv (inner feelings), not just your physical presence in a temple.
1. Is going to temple important?
Yes, going to a Jain mandir has many benefits:
- It reminds us of dharma in the middle of busy life
- We get satsang, listen to pravachan, do pratikraman, puja, samayik etc.
- The atmosphere of the temple is pure, peaceful and helps in aatma chintan
- Children and youth learn by seeing others doing devotion and discipline
So, visiting mandir is a very good and highly encouraged practice. Our Acharyas have always supported going to temple, doing darshan, chaitya-vandan, etc.

2. If I do not go to temple, am I “less of a Jain”?
No, you are not automatically less of a Jain just because you don’t go to the temple regularly.
In Jain dharma, the real identity of a Jain is:
- Samyak Darshan – right faith
- Samyak Gyaan – right knowledge
- Samyak Charitra – right conduct
If someone:
- avoids himsa as much as possible
- speaks truthfully
- controls anger, greed, ego, attachment
- does paath, samayik, pratikraman (even at home)
- has deep respect for Tirthankars and saints
then that person is genuinely walking on the Jain path, with or without frequent temple visits.
Temple is a support, not a measuring scale for your “Jain-ness”.
3. When is not going to temple okay?
There are many genuine reasons:
- No temple nearby
- Health issues, disability, old age
- Family responsibilities, job timings, small kids, etc.
In such cases, you can:
- Do jaap, paath, samayik at home
- Keep a small ghar-derasar and do simple puja or darshan
- Listen to Jain pravachan online
- Read Jain granths or stories daily
Bhagwan sees bhāv, not distance traveled.
4. But if a temple is available and I’m just lazy?
Then gently be honest with yourself:
- If I can go for movies, malls, outings, but never for mandir,
- Try starting with once a week or even once a month sincerely.
- Don’t feel guilty; just slowly improve.
5. Digambar / Shwetambar view
- Both traditions give high respect to mandir, chaitya-vandan, and tirth-yatra.
- Neither tradition says: “If you don’t go to mandir, you are not Jain.”
- Both say: main thing is self-purification (aatma-shuddhi) and following vows.

So, you are not less of a Jain just because you don’t go to temple often. But, if you have the opportunity, use the mandir as a powerful tool to strengthen your Jain values, concentration, and inner peace.
