How many agams in total are there in Jainism
In Jainism, there are a total of 45 Agams (scriptures) according to the Śvetāmbara tradition. These are divided as follows:
1. 11 Angā Agams – The primary canonical texts.
2. 12 Upānga Agams – Secondary texts explaining and expanding upon the Angas.
3. 6 Chedasūtras – Texts on monastic discipline.
4. 4 Mūlasūtras – Fundamental texts, mainly for beginners and monks.
5. 10 Prakīrnaka Sūtras – Miscellaneous texts addressing various topics.
6. Nandi and Anuyogadvara Sūtra – Additional texts sometimes included.
Total: 45 Agams
It is important to note that the Digambara tradition believes that the original Agams were lost over time and do not accept the current Śvetāmbara Agam texts as authentic. Digambaras follow their own set of texts, such as the Ṣaṭkhaṅḍāgama and Kasāyapāhuda.
