    mantra whwn performing dhoop

    7 months ago 217

When offering dhoop (incense) in Jain pūjā, there is no single compulsory Jain-agam mantra that must be said. Most Jain families and both Digambar / Shvetāmbara traditions follow this simple and safe practice:

    1. Main mantra to recite

While offering dhoop, you may recite:

Navkār Mantra (Namokār Mantra) This is the purest and most universal Jain mantra, accepted in all traditions.

    You can simply do:

    • First join hands, focus on the Jina.
    • Offer the dhoop near the idol.
    • Slowly recite Navkār Mantra (once, 3 times, or as you like), with this feeling:

    > “As this dhoop spreads fragrance and removes bad smell, > may the darkness of my ignorance and passions be removed, > and may good qualities spread in my soul.”

    2. Simple bhāv (inner prayer) during dhoop

If you want a very short bhāv-vachan in your own words, you can think:
    • “Just as this fragrance spreads, may the fragrance of right faith, right knowledge and right conduct spread in my life.”
    • “May anger, pride, deceit and greed be burnt away like this dhoop.”

This keeps the ritual completely in line with Jain Dharma: no worldly asking, only inner purification and moksha-bhāv.

    3. If you do full Aṣṭaprakārī Pūjā

Dhoop is one of the eight dravyas in Aṣṭaprakārī Pūjā (Jal, Chandan, Pushp, Dhoop, Deepak, Akshat, Naivedya, Phal). Its bhāv is generally: removal of inner darkness and spreading of virtues.
