Jain view can be understood in two parts: 1) Planets (graha) 2) Astrology (jyotish / horoscope, navagraha etc.)

1. Planets in Jainism

• Jain scriptures do accept the existence of planets, stars, suns, moons etc. as part of the vast loka (universe).
• They are inert physical bodies, not gods who control our life.
• Planets may have natural physical influence (light, heat, seasons, tides etc.), but they do not decide our punya–paap, happiness–sorrow, or moksha.
• What actually binds and gives result is karma dravya (karmic matter) attached to the soul, created by our own thoughts, speech and actions.

So, planets are part of Jain cosmology, but they are not rulers of destiny.

2. Astrology in Jainism

• Jain dharma is based on karma and puruṣārtha (self‑effort), not on planetary fate.
• Our present and future are mainly shaped by:

- our past karmas (sañcit karma), and - our current choices and efforts (present karma, right conduct).

Because of this:

• Astrology is not a core Jain doctrine.
• Jain āgams do not prescribe horoscope matching, planetary worship, or gemstone remedies as a required spiritual practice.
• What is central is:

- Samyak Darshan (Right Faith) - Samyak Jñān (Right Knowledge) - Samyak Chāritra (Right Conduct)

These three, practiced with ahimsā, self‑control, and non‑attachment, lead to liberation – not planetary positions.

3. Navagraha, “Jain astrology”, and cultural practices

• In Indian culture, many Jains also live among strong Hindu astrological traditions (navagraha, rāhu–ketu, muhurat, etc.).
• Therefore:

- Some Jains consult astrologers, see “good times”, or keep navagraha pictures. - Some Jain temples may have navagraha images or “Jain navagraha” interpretation.

• Important point:

Jain acharyas generally treat this as cultural / social, not as essential Jain sādhanā.

From a Jain point of view:

• If any “Jain astrology” is taught, at best it can be used as a psychological or cultural tool,

but it cannot override: - law of karma - personal responsibility - need for self‑discipline and inner purification.

4. Digambar and Shvetambar view

On this topic, both traditions are essentially the same:

• Neither Digambar nor Shvetambar scriptures make astrology or navagraha‑puja a necessary part of the path.
• Both put the main stress on:

- control of passions (kashāya) - vrats and guṇvrats - tapa (austerities) - study, meditation, and non‑violence.

Local customs may differ, but doctrine is: karma + effort, not planets + fate.
