    prayer everyday by jains

    7 months ago 167

For Jains, the main daily prayer is the Navkar (Namokar) Mantra. Almost all Jains, Shwetambar and Digambar, recite it every day.

    1. Daily main mantra – Navkar (Namokar) Mantra

    In simple (Prakrit) form:

    णमो अरिहंताणं। णमो सिद्धाणं। णमो आयरियाणं। णमो उवज्झायाणं। णमो लोए सव्वसाहूणं॥

    Simple meaning (arth):

    • I bow to the Arihants – perfectly awakened beings.
    • I bow to the Siddhas – fully liberated souls.
    • I bow to the Acharyas – heads of the Jain order.
    • I bow to the Upadhyays – spiritual teachers.
    • I bow to all Sadhus and Sadhvis – monks and nuns everywhere.

Essence: We are not asking for money, health, or success. We are simply bowing to the highest spiritual qualities and wishing to follow that path. This makes the soul pure and peaceful.

Both Shwetambar and Digambar accept this same basic mantra. There are only small pronunciation differences, not meaning differences.

    2. Other common daily prayers

Many Jains also add some of these in their daily routine (morning or evening):

    1. Khamemi Savvajive / Micchami Dukkadam

    - Asking forgiveness from all living beings for any harm done by thoughts, words, or actions.

    1. Samayik / small meditation

    - Sitting quietly for some minutes, chanting Navkar and watching your thoughts calmly.

    1. Pratikraman (short form for laypeople)

    - Remembering wrong actions of the day and repenting with a promise to improve.

    1. Stavan / Stotra (bhakti songs)

    - Many families sing a short stavan of a Tirthankar daily (e.g., Mahavir Swami).

    ---

    3. Very simple daily practice (you can follow this)

    Morning or evening:

    1. Sit in a clean, quiet place.
    2. Join hands or sit with straight back.
    3. Slowly chant Navkar Mantra at least 9 times, with understanding.
    4. At the end, think:

    - “May I also walk on the path of non‑violence, truth, and self‑control.”

    1. Mentally ask forgiveness for any hurt caused that day.

This much, done every day with shraddha (faith) and samajh (understanding), is a very good Jain daily prayer practice.
