As a Jain I am worried, are there any Jains in the Epstein files?

    7 months ago 163

As of now, the “Epstein files” that have been released name thousands of people from many countries, professions, and religions. They are very large, incomplete, and in many places unclear (some people are just mentioned in passing, some are redacted, some are only in contact lists, etc.).

Because of this, it is not realistically possible for me to reliably check, in a complete and accurate way, whether anyone who is Jain by religion appears anywhere in those millions of pages. Also, people’s religion is usually not even stated in those documents. So I cannot honestly say “yes” or “no” in a precise way.

From a Jain dharma point of view, a few important things:

    1. Karma is always individual.

If any person, of any religion, did harm, the fruits of that karma are theirs alone. The entire community does not “share” that sin just because of a label like Jain, Hindu, Christian, etc.

    1. Do not let fear and gossip create new kashāyas.

Worrying “Are there Jains in those files?” can easily turn into anxiety, anger, or shame about being Jain. That only binds our own new karmas. Instead, Jain dharma teaches: - Focus on your own conduct (samyak darshan, jñān, chāritra). - Avoid asātya (unverified statements) and nindā (slandering) of others without clear proof.

    1. Anekāntavād and careful judgment.

Just being “named in files” does not automatically mean someone committed a crime. In many cases, people are just in contact lists, invited to events, or mentioned in emails. Jain view encourages us to avoid one‑sided judgments and harsh conclusions without full knowledge.

    1. What you can do as a Jain

    - Strengthen your own commitment to ahimsā, brahmacharya, and aparigraha. - Support and encourage clean, ethical living in your family and community. - Where there is genuine crime, Jain teachings fully support that truth should come out and victims should get justice—but this is always on a person‑by‑person basis, not by religion.

    So, in short:

    • I cannot honestly confirm whether “any Jains” appear in such a huge, mixed set of documents.
    • Even if some individual Jains did, Jain dharma is not judged by the failings of any single person. Your responsibility is to keep your own conduct pure and fearless in light of dharma.
