Here is the simple Jain story of Sudarshan Seth (सुदर्शन सेठ):
1. Who was Sudarshan Seth?
- He was a very rich merchant and a great Jain shravak.
- He is counted among the Panch Mahāsatī shravaks – ideal householders known for very strong character and observance of vows.
- He lived in Champapuri (near today’s Bhagalpur / Pataliputra region, Bihar).

2. The main incident – test of character
- Sudarshan’s purity
- He was extremely handsome, wealthy and respected. - But more important than wealth was his charitra – pure conduct, strict control over senses, deep faith in Jain Dharma, regular meditation and vrata.
- The queen’s bad desire
- In one version, the queen of the kingdom sees Sudarshan and becomes attracted. - Forgetting her status and dharma, she wants to have an immoral relation with him. - She sends her maid again and again to bring Sudarshan secretly.
- Sudarshan refuses sin
- Sudarshan clearly refuses every attempt. - To protect his brahmacharya (chastity) and to avoid any wrong situation, he even says, “I am not capable / I am like an impotent person,” just to escape from sin. - His mind stays fixed in Navkar Mantra, samayik and meditation, not in sense pleasures.
- False accusation
- When the queen fails to shake him, she becomes angry and takes revenge. - She scratches her own body, tears her clothes, breaks her ornaments, and starts crying loudly that “Sudarshan tried to dishonour me!” - The king, hearing this lie and seeing her condition, believes her and becomes furious.
- Death punishment
- Without proper enquiry, the king orders capital punishment for Sudarshan. - In some tellings, he is taken to be hanged; in others, he is placed on a śūl (sharp spike/pole) or pyre as punishment.

3. Miracle of truth and Navkar
- While going to death, Sudarshan remains calm, remembers:
- Because of the purity of his soul and truthfulness, the devas (heavenly beings) protect him.
Different versions describe the miracle like this:
- The rope or spike turns into a beautiful throne.
- Instead of burning or dying, he is seen safe, seated with divine honour.
- Everyone present realizes:
The king becomes shocked, ashamed and realizes his mistake.

4. Truth revealed and repentance
- Under pressure of truth and public awareness, the queen’s falsehood is exposed.
- She accepts her fault; in some versions she does prāyaśchitta (repentance).
- The king bows to Sudarshan, asks forgiveness and gives him great honour.
- People begin to praise his satya (truth), brahmacharya and dharma everywhere.

5. Later life and spiritual end
- After such a great test, Sudarshan’s vairagya (detachment) becomes very strong.
- He takes diksha, becomes a muni and continues on the path of self‑purification.
- Traditional accounts state that he later attains a high spiritual state and goes to heaven, and his life is remembered as a model for ideal shravaks.

6. Main lessons from Sudarshan Seth’s story
- Brahmacharya & control over senses
- Even if wealth, beauty and opportunity are present, a true shravak keeps his vows above all.
- Power of Navkar & purity
- When a person’s inner bhava is pure, even severe worldly situations cannot truly harm him; karmas ripen but dharma protects.
- False accusation cannot hide truth forever
- For some time, lies may win externally, but satya and shuddha charitra finally shine.
- Result of strong character
- Because of one man’s firmness in dharma, not only his own life is saved, but king, queen and citizens all receive a powerful lesson in Jain values.
This is why Sudarshan Seth is remembered with great respect in Jain tradition as an ideal example of firm character, brahmacharya and shravak-dharma.
