Siddhi and loka is anant and nitya-why?

    7 months ago 143

In Jain Darshan, both Siddhi (state of Siddha) and Loka (universe) are called anant (infinite) and nitya (eternal), but for different reasons.

    I’ll explain very simply:

    ---

    1. Why Siddhi is anant (infinite)?

Siddhi = state of liberated souls (Siddhas) staying forever in Siddha‑śilā.

    • From beginningless time (anādi kāl), in every time-cycle, some souls keep attaining moksha.
    • This has been happening since endless past and will keep happening in endless future.
    • So the number of Siddha souls is without limit – anant (actually often described as “asaṅkhyāt-anant”).
    • Each Siddha has:
    - anant jñān (infinite knowledge) - anant darshan (infinite perception) - anant sukha (infinite bliss) - anant vīrya (infinite energy)
    • Once a soul becomes Siddha, it never falls back, never takes birth again.
    • So Siddhi is nitya (eternal): the state of Siddhahood never ends, and Siddhas remain forever in Siddha‑loka.

Both Digambar and Shwetambar agree on:

    • Infinite number of Siddhas
    • Eternal existence of Siddhas in Siddha‑śilā
(only some small details in descriptions may differ).

You can read more about Siddhas and moksha here and here .

    ---

    2. Why Loka is anant (infinite)?

Here “Loka” means the whole universe – all substances (dravyas): jīva, pudgal, dharmāstikāy, adharmāstikāy, ākāś, kāl.

    • Each dravya has anant pradeś (infinitely many space-points).
    • So the total universe is said to be anant in pradeś, hence in that sense anant.
    • Also, time (kāl) is beginningless and endless → anant.

    So:

    • No first moment of loka,
    • No last moment of loka,
    • No “creation” and no “destruction” of the universe – it only changes its modes (paryāy).

That is why Jain Agams say loka is anādi–anant.

You can see a simple explanation of loka and its structure here .

    ---

    3. Why Siddhi and Loka are nitya (eternal)?

In Jain philosophy, every dravya (substance) has:

    • Nitya dravya – it never gets destroyed, it only changes forms.
    • Anitya paryāy – the modes (conditions) keep changing.

    (a) Loka is nitya because:

    • Loka = collection of all eternal dravyas.
    • Dravyas never end, so loka as a whole is also nitya.
    • Only forms (birth–death, growth–decay, etc.) change.

    (b) Siddhi is nitya because:

    • Siddhi = particular pure state of the soul when all karmas are finished.
    • After this, no new karma can bind, no new body, no rebirth.
    • So that state remains forever – once Siddha, always Siddha.

    Thus:

    • Siddhi is anant → infinite Siddhas + infinite qualities.
    • Siddhi is nitya → Siddha‑state never ends.
    • Loka is anant → infinite space-points, infinite time.
    • Loka is nitya → universe never created, never destroyed.

This is the core Jain view in both Shwetambar and Digambar traditions (with only minor technical variations in descriptions).
