What are the real last names of jains
In Jainism there is no single “real” or fixed last name for all Jains.
Some clear points:
- Jain = Dharma, not surname
- “Jain” means follower of the Jinas (Tirthankars). - Many people use “Jain” as a surname, but it is not compulsory and not the only “real” Jain last name.
- Most Jains keep their family / community surnames
Very commonly used Jain surnames (they are family or community names, not religious labels) include, for example: - Shah, Jain, Soni, Saraogi/Sarawagi, Oswal/Oshwal, Porwal, Khandelwal, Bafna, Surana, Vora/Vohra, Gadia, Ghelani, Duggar, Mittal, etc. ( jainknowledge.com) These come from: - Region (Gujarat, Rajasthan, MP, etc.) - Old business/trade identity - Big community group (Oswal, Porwal, Khandelwal, Vaniya, etc.)
- Gotra and caste are social, not spiritual
- Some Śvetāmbara communities talk of 84 gotras (chourasi gotra) – these are clan/lineage names used for marriage and family records, not spiritual ranks. ( jainknowledge.com) - Digambar Jains often do not stress gotra much at all. ( jainknowledge.com) - Jain scriptures focus on Right Faith, Right Knowledge, Right Conduct, not on surname or gotra.
- If someone converts to Jainism
- They usually keep their existing family surname. There is no rule that they must adopt “Jain” or any particular last name. ( jainknowledge.com)
So:
- There is no one “real” Jain last name.
- Any surname can belong to a Jain family; what makes a person Jain is their faith and practice, not the word at the end of their name.
