How is karma related to science

    7 months ago 136

In Jainism, karma and science meet mainly in the idea of natural law and cause–effect, but they are not the same thing.

    1. Karma as a “natural law” (similar to scientific law)

    Jain philosophy says:

    • The universe runs by eternal, natural laws – no creator God arranging rewards and punishments.
    • Karma works automatically, like gravity:
    - If you drop a stone, it falls. - If you do violent or selfish actions, matching karmas bind.
    • So, just as science talks about law of gravity, law of motion, Jainism talks about law of karma – a fixed rule of cause and effect for our inner and outer life.

    2. Karma as subtle matter (near to scientific “particles” idea)

    According to Jainism:

    • Karma is a very, very subtle kind of matter present everywhere in the universe.
    • When the soul creates vibrations through mind, speech, and body, karmic particles come and stick to the soul.
    • These karmas:
    - Cover the soul’s knowledge, perception, energy, bliss. - Decide body, lifespan, status, pleasure–pain, etc.

This is a systematic model, a bit like how science uses:

    • Atoms, particles, fields, energy
    to explain the physical world.

    Jainism uses:

    • Soul (jīva), karmic matter, laws of bondage and release
to explain consciousness, character, and rebirth.

    3. Where it differs from modern science

    • Science studies what can be measured with instruments: mass, charge, brain activity, etc.
    • Jain karma is too subtle to be detected by current scientific tools.
It is a spiritual doctrine, known through: - teachings of Tirthankars, - logic, - inner spiritual experience – not laboratory proof.

    So:

    • Karma is “scientific” in structure – clear laws, categories, logic, cause–effect.
    • But it is not yet part of modern experimental science.
It belongs to Jain spiritual science (adhyātma-vijñān), not physics or chemistry.

    4. Practical bridge between karma and science

    Both teach:

    • Every action has a consequence.
    • Small, repeated actions create patterns:
    - In science: habits change the brain, body, environment. - In Jainism: habits attract and shape karmic particles.
    • By changing:
    - Thoughts (no krodh, mān, māyā, lobh), - Speech (truthful, gentle), - Actions (ahimsā, aparigraha), we change both: - our outer life (which science can observe), - and our inner karmic load (which Jainism describes).
