what jain sect does monks not eat only once a day
In Jainism:
- Digambar monks – eat only once a day (eka-bhukti), in the daytime, usually standing, and never after sunset. This is a strict rule of their monastic discipline.
- Śvetāmbara monks and nuns – usually take gochari (alms) more than once in a day, still only in daylight and never after sunset. Many Śvetāmbara traditions allow two meals (biyasanu) for monks/nuns, though some may choose to eat only once as a personal vow.
So, the sect where monks do not always eat only once a day (i.e., often eat more than once, within limits) is Śvetāmbara (including Sthānakvāsī, Terāpanthī, etc.). The common point in all sects: no eating or drinking after sunset for monks, and very simple, limited food.
