    How to do Samaria

    7 months ago 133

I think you mean “Samayik” (समायिक / સમાયક) – the Jain practice of sitting in equanimity. Here is a very simple way to do Samayik at home.

    ---

    1. Prepare

    • Time: Fix about 48 minutes (one muhurt). If difficult, start with 15–20 minutes.
    • Place: Clean, quiet corner; spread a clean cloth/asana.
    • Dress: Clean, simple clothes (white if possible).
    • Phone: Silent / airplane mode; use only as a timer if needed.

    You can read more here

    ---

    2. Sit properly

    • Sit cross‑legged on the floor, or on a chair if needed.
    • Back straight, body still, hands in lap.
    • Eyes gently closed or looking down.

    ---

    3. Begin with Namokar Mantra

Slowly recite Navkar Mantra 3–5 times, with full attention on its meaning:

    • Bow to Arihant, Siddh, Acharya, Upadhyay, and all Sadhus.

    ---

    4. Take a small vow (Pachchhakkhan)

In your own words, make a resolve like:

    > “For this Samayik time, > I will stay in equanimity, > avoid hurting any living being by mind, speech, or body, > and keep my thoughts peaceful and pure.”

(Your local tradition may have a fixed Pachchhakkhan gatha.)

You can see an example here

    ---

    5. Main practice during Samayik

    You can combine these:

    1. Breath awareness (5–10 min)

    - Watch your natural breathing. - If thoughts come, gently bring mind back to breath.

    1. Reflections (Anupreksha/Bhavana)

Slowly think on: - Everything is temporary (anitya). - I am soul, different from body, name, relations, things. - Only my own effort on the right path can save me (asharana). - Anger, pride, deceit, greed bind bad karma – I will reduce them.

    1. Feelings for all beings

    - Maitri – friendship for all. - Pramod – joy in others’ goodness. - Karuna – compassion for suffering beings. - Madhyasthata – equanimity towards those doing wrong.

    1. Kayotsarg (stillness)

    - For a few minutes, keep body completely still. - Just feel: “I am a pure knower–seer (Gnata–Drashta).”

    1. Short Svadhyaya (scripture / stotra)

    - Read or recite a small sutra, stavak, or Navkar with understanding. - Don’t rush; focus on meaning.

    ---

    6. End with repentance and forgiveness

    At the end:

    • Mentally review any wrong thoughts during Samayik.
    • Say from heart:
    > “Whatever mistakes I have done, knowingly or unknowingly, > I ask forgiveness from all living beings.”

    Again recite Navkar Mantra once.

    ---

    7. After Samayik

    • Slowly open eyes.
    • Get up gently, keeping calmness for some time.
    • Try to carry that peaceful attitude into your daily work.

    ---

If you tell me whether you follow Shwetambar or Digambar, I can give a more exact step‑by‑step vidhi (which sutras/stotras to recite) according to that tradition.
