why get up early
In Jain dharma, getting up early is encouraged because it supports both spiritual practice and self‑discipline.
Here are simple Jain reasons:
- Time is very pure (shuddh samay)
- Early morning (before or around sunrise) is considered a calm, sattvic time. - Mind is fresh, surroundings are quiet, so it is the best time for Navkār Mantra, samayik, prarthana, and scriptural study.
- Helps in ahimsā and food discipline
- When you wake early, it becomes easy to follow Navkārśi / Porshi (first food only after some time from sunrise) and to avoid eating late at night. Both practices reduce violence to tiny living beings and support good health. - Regular early rising naturally pushes you to sleep early and eat on time.
- Better for sādhanā (spiritual practice)
- Monks and nuns in both Digambar and Shvetāmbara traditions rise very early for prayer, pratikraman, dhyān, svādhyāy. - Household Jains try to follow this in a lighter way, according to their capacity.
- Strong habit and self‑control
- Waking up early daily is a simple but powerful tap (austerity). - It trains the mind to win over laziness (pramād) and gives more time for meaningful work, not just for body‑comfort.
- Good for body and mind
- Light, timely dinner + early sleep + early wake‑up keeps digestion better and mind clearer, which again helps in right thinking and right conduct.
In short: For a Jain, getting up early is not only for health or success, but mainly to start the day with dharma instead of distraction.
