    explain digambar chaityavandan

    7 months ago 131

In Digambar tradition, the word “Chaityavandan” is not a fixed, standard daily liturgy like in Shvetambar Murtipujak. But many people still use the word loosely for:

    • Going to the Jain temple (chaitya)
    • Doing vandan (bowing) and stotra‑path in front of the Jin idol

So “Digambar Chaityavandan” usually means: the full respectful worship done in front of the Digambar Jina idol.

    ---

    1. Main idea in Digambar style

    Purpose:

    • Bow to the Arihant and Siddha Bhagwan
    • Cultivate vinay (humility), bhakti (devotion), and atmashuddhi (inner purity)
    • Remind ourselves of the path of samyak darshan–jnan–charitra

This is done not by a fixed “Chaityavandan sutra‑sequence”, but through:

    • Deva‑pūjā (idol worship with dravya)
    • Stotra and mantra recitation
    • Namaskar and contemplation

    ---

    2. Usual steps in a simple Digambar “Chaityavandan” style worship

Exact method varies by sangh/mandir, but a common simple pattern is:

    (A) Preparation

    • Snan (bath), clean clothes (simple, preferably white)
    • Remove leather items, keep mind calm and respectful
    • Enter temple quietly, no gossip or worldly talk

    (B) Darshan & Pranam

    1. Darshan of Jina idol

    - Stand peacefully, see the idol from head to toe with shraddha

    1. Namaskar / Pranam

    - Do panchang / ashta‑ang / sashtang dandvat (as per your temple’s maryada) - Mentally bow to all Arihants, Siddhas, Acharyas, Upadhyayas, Sadhus

    (C) Deva‑Pūjā (if being done)

Often includes some or all of:

    • Abhishek / Snatra puja – jal, ksheer, etc. on the idol (where allowed)
    • Ashta‑dravya puja – jal, chandan, pushpa, dhup, deep, akshat, naivedya, phal
    • While offering each dravya, short stutis or mantras are recited with bhav

Some temples have a set “paddhati” book for this.

    (D) Stotra‑path / Mantra‑jap

Common Digambar recitations (may differ by region):

    • Navakar (Namokar) Mantra
    • Bhaktamar Stotra
    • Logassa / Chaturvimshati‑stava (praise of 24 Tirthankars)
    • Other Digambar stotras like:
    - Kalyan Mandir stotra - Adinath / Parshvanath / Mahavir special stotras - Barah Bhakti, etc.

The aim is to praise the gunas (qualities) of Tirthankars and purify one’s own dravya.

    (E) Prarthana, Kshama‑yachna, Dhyan

    • Short prayer for samyak darshan and right conduct
    • Asking forgiveness for mistakes done knowingly/unknowingly
    • A few moments of shant dhyan on the pure soul (shuddh atma bhav)

    (F) Aarti / Mangal (if in temple practice)

    • Deepak aarti of Bhagwan
    • Mangal or shanti‑path for sarva‑jiva‑kalyan (welfare of all souls)

    ---

    3. Difference from Shvetambar Chaityavandan

    • Shvetambar Murtipujak:
    - “Chaityavandan” = a fixed avashyak liturgy with specific Prakrit/Sanskrit sutras in a set order (Jagchintamani, Logassa, Khamasamana, etc.)
    • Digambar:
    - No single, uniform “Chaityavandan booklet” for all - Emphasis is on deva‑pūjā + stotra‑path + Namokar + dhyan - The word “Chaityavandan” is used more in a general sense: “mandir jaa kar Bhagwan ke samne vandan, puja, stotra‑path karna”

So when someone says “Digambar Chaityavandan”, practically they mean: “Complete Digambar style temple worship, bowing and reciting stotras before the Jina idol with pure bhav.”
