can we eat jackfruit
In Jainism, jackfruit is generally to be avoided, especially by those who follow a strict Jain diet.
Main reasons (based on ahimsa – non‑violence):
- Many seeds = many lives
- One jackfruit has a large number of seeds. - Each seed is considered a potential life, so eating it means destroying many possible lives at once.
- Anantkāy / many organisms
- The sticky, fibrous part of jackfruit can contain many tiny insects and microorganisms. - While cutting and eating, there is high risk of killing subtle living beings.
- Traditional Jain practice
- Both Śvetāmbara and Digambara tradition–followers who are strict in food rules avoid jackfruit for these reasons. - It is usually counted among foods with more violence (adhik hiṁsā), similar in spirit to other “multi‑life” items that careful Jains avoid.
So, if you want to follow sāttvik, careful Jain aahar, it is better not to eat jackfruit.
