History of kalpdrum parshwanath
Here is a simple, focused history of Kalpdrum Parshwanath (also called Mathura Parshwanath):
- Location & Idol
- The temple is in Mathura (U.P.), an ancient Jain tirth once known as Indrapur. - The mulnayak is a white idol of Bhagwan Kalpdrum Parshwanath, about 58 cm in height, in padmāsan with seven-hooded serpent (shesh-phana) umbrella above the head.
- Ancient Jain background of Mathura
- From the time of 7th Tirthankar Shri Suparshwanath Bhagwan, Mathura became a major Jain centre. - A golden stupa of Suparshwanath Bhagwan was made here by devas. - In the time of 23rd Tirthankar Shri Parshwanath Bhagwan, this stupa was covered with bricks and further developed. - In the 8th century (V.S.), under Āchārya Shri Bappabhatt (Bappabhatsurishvarji), the tirth was again restored. - Āchārya Haribhadrasuriji performed 15 days upvās (fast) here and restored the damaged Mahanishith Sūtra.
- Connection with other great events
- Mathura is also the nirvāṇ-bhūmi of Shri Jambuswami, the last Kevali (omniscient). - In Vikram Samvat 826, King Aam (Aam Raja), on the guidance of Āchārya Bappabhatt, renovated the temple and installed an idol of Bhagwan Mahavir as well. - Up to about the 14th century, Mathura had temples of Kalpdrum Parshwanath, Neminath Bhagwan and Mahalakshmi Stupa together.
- Temple construction and hiding of the idol
- The temple of Kalpdrum Parshwanath is traditionally said to be built by Kubersena Ganika. - Later it was renovated by King Aam. - During Muslim invasions, to save the murti, the idol was hidden underground. - Many years later, in excavation, this ancient idol was rediscovered and reinstalled in the present temple.
- Recent renovation & present management
- The last major renovation of Kalpdrum Parshwanath temple was done in V.S. 1984 under Muni Shri Darshanvijayji. - Today it is managed by Shri Chintamani Parshwanath Jain Shwetambar Pedhi (Agra). - The temple is about 4 km from Mathura railway station, and Mathura is about 54 km from Agra.
- Spiritual importance
- The idol of Kalpdrum Parshwanath is considered very ancient, powerful and miraculous. - Devotees believe that with shraddhā and true bhakti, wishes are fulfilled and inner peace is gained. - The tirth and Bhagwan Kalpdrum Parshwanath are remembered in many Jain granths, such as descriptions of Mathura tirth and 108 Parshwanath.
