What kriya we have to do in varshitap
In Varshitap, the main kriya is not only fasting – it is a full year of sādhanā (spiritual practice). I’ll explain in very simple points.
---
1. Fasting pattern (main tap)
Common Śvetāmbara way (check your guru / sangh for exact rule):
- One day Upvās (full fast) – only boiled water at fixed times.
- Next day Bhojan – simple Jain food, usually:
- This alternate‑day pattern continues for about 1 year, and parṇā is done on Akṣay Tritīyā with ikṣu‑ras (sugarcane juice) in memory of Bhagwān Ṛṣabhdev.
Some traditions change details (for example, more days of full Upvās, or Ayambil on eating days). Always follow your guru’s maryādā.
---
2. Daily spiritual kriyā (both fasting and eating days)
Try to keep these every day as much as possible:
- Namokār Mantra
- Many people fix a daily count (e.g. 108 or 1008), done with full dhyān.
- Samayik
- Sit calmly, no raag–dvesh (attachment–hatred), about 48 minutes if possible. - Think: “I am ātmā, separate from body, mind, and karma.”
- Pratikraman
- Daily or at least on important tithis. - Accept and confess mistakes of the day, ask for kṣamā (forgiveness).
- Svādhyāy (study)
- Read/listen about: - Life of Ṛṣabhdev Bhagwān - Tattva gyan (7/9 tattva), 12 bhāvana, etc. - Even 15–30 minutes with concentration is very good.
- Jāp / Stotra
- Navkār jāp, Uvasaggaharam, Logassa, or your guru‑given mantra. - Do with bhaav, not as a race or counting only.
---
3. Vyavahār & charitra (conduct during Varshitap)
Varshitap is not only not‑eating; the real kriyā is inner control:
- Ahiṁsā:
- Satya & gentle speech:
- Brahmacharya (celibacy):
- Aparigraha (non‑possessiveness):
- Control of mind:
---
4. Temple / Pujā related kriyā
As per your sect and health:
- Derāsar darshan whenever possible (or home altar if not).
- Snātra / Pujā if maryādā allows and body permits.
- Aarti, Mangal Divo, Navkār valī, etc., with bhakti.
- On special tithis, listen to pravachans on Ṛṣabhdev and Tap.
---
5. Dān & seva
Along with fast, add vaiyāvr̥ttya (seva):
- Help sadhus–sādhvīs, mandir, or genuinely needy beings.
- Support others’ tapas (provide shuddh food/water, arrange satsang, etc.).
- Do all seva with vinay, no expectation of name–fame.
---
6. Digambar / Śvetāmbara note
- Both traditions accept Varshitap/Varsi Tap as a very high tap.
- Śvetāmbara: Usually “alternate day upvās–bhojan” till Akṣay Tritīyā, with special focus on Ṛṣabhdev charitra and sugarcane‑juice parṇā.
- Digambar: Pattern may differ (length, type of fast, Ayambil/Ekāsan rules, brahmacharya details), but the essence is same – strong tapas, control of senses, and continuous dharmic kriyā.
So, the main kriyā of Varshitap is:
> Alternate‑day fasting plus every day Namokār, samayik, pratikraman, svādhyāy, bhakti, ahiṁsā, brahmacharya, and vinay.
