“Gangerwal” is the name of a Jain community / caste, not a Jain sect like Digambar or Shwetambar.

• Historically, Gangerwal Jains are mostly found in the Digambar Jain community (they are listed as a Digambar Jain caste in older community directories).
• However, like many Jain castes, in principle a family with the Gangerwal surname could follow either Digambar or Shwetambar practices today.
• So:

- Sect (panth) = Digambar / Shwetambar (religious division) - Gangerwal = social community name (jaati / caste), mostly associated with Digambar Jains.
