    Khamana in pratikaman

    7 months ago 118

In Pratikraman, “Khamana / Khamna” usually refers to the Kshamapana (forgiveness) part, mainly this sutra:

Prakrit text (very common form): “Khamemi savva jīve, savve jīvā khamantu me; mitti me savva‑bhūesu, veram majjha na kenai.”

    Simple meaning:

    • Khamemi savva jīve – I forgive all living beings.
    • Savve jīvā khamantu me – May all living beings forgive me.
    • Mitti me savva‑bhūesu – I have friendship with all living beings.
    • Veram majjha na kenai – I have enmity towards none.

This is recited in Pratikraman as the heart of Kshamā (forgiveness):

    • You clear hatred from your side.
    • You ask forgiveness for any hurt caused by you (in thought, word, or deed).
    • You make a vow to live with maitrī (friendliness) and ahimsā (non‑violence) towards all.

    Digambar / Shwetambar note

    • Both traditions use this meaning and spirit.
    • Pronunciation or small wording changes may occur (e.g., savvajīve / savve jīvā), but the arth (meaning) is the same: universal forgiveness and friendship.

This “Khamana” portion is usually followed (or accompanied) by saying “Micchāmi Dukkaḍaṁ” from the heart – “May my faults be forgiven.”
