How to do Arihant cheiyanam chaityavandan
I’ll explain in a very simple way how to do Arihant Cheiyam Chaityavandan (Śvetāmbara Mūrtipūjak style), keeping focus on bhāv (inner feeling). (“Arihant cheiyanam” is part of the standard Chaityavandan sutras where we bow specially to Arihantas.)
---
1. Before starting
- Take bath / wash hands, face, feet.
- Wear clean, simple (preferably white) clothes.
- Go to derāsar (temple) or sit in a clean place at home facing Jina idol / photo.
At the temple:
- Do 3 Nissihis
- Do pradakshiṇā (3 rounds slowly) and
- Do pañchāṅg / aṣṭāṅg praṇām to the Jina.
Then sit quietly on an āsan (cloth) facing the idol.

2. Basic Chaityavandan sequence (simple)
This is a short, practical order many people follow:
- Navkār Mantra – 3 or 9 times
Recite slowly with full concentration.
- Logassa Sutra (Chauvīsattho / Chaturviṃśati‑stava)
– stuti of 24 Tirthankars.
- Arihant Cheiyanam part (Arihant Vandana)
In many books, the line appears inside a longer vandanā like:
> “Arihant‑cheiyaṇam namo, Siddha‑cheiyaṇam namo, Āyariyāṇaṃ namo, Uvajjhāyāṇaṃ namo, Loe savva‑sāhūṇaṃ namo.”
Meaning in simple English:
- Arihant‑cheiyanam namo – I bow to the Chaitya (seat/abode/presence) of all Arihantas, the perfectly enlightened beings.
- Siddha‑cheiyanam namo – I bow to the Chaitya of all Siddhas (liberated souls).
- Āyariyāṇaṃ namo – I bow to all Āchāryas.
- Uvajjhāyāṇaṃ namo – I bow to all Upādhyāyas.
- Loe savva‑sāhūṇaṃ namo – I bow to all sadhus in the whole universe.
How to do here:
- Sit straight, fold hands, and when you say “namo”, bend slightly or do small namaskār.
- Feel: “I am very small, full of faults; they are pure. I want to follow their path.”
- Khamemi savva jīvā… (forgiveness)
Say:
> “Khamemi savva jīve, savve jīvā khamantu me, > Mittī me savva‑bhūesu, veram majjha na keṇai.”
Simple meaning:
- I forgive all living beings.
- May all living beings forgive me.
- I have friendship with all.
- I have enmity towards none.
- Kayotsarga / short meditation
- Sit (or stand) still for 1–3 minutes.
- Concentrate on the qualities of Arihant Bhagwān:
- Feel: “May I slowly walk on this path.”
- Mangal / closing
You can end with a short mangal verse like:
> “Sarve jīvā sukhi bhavantu” or > “Mangalṃ Bhagavān Vīro, mangalaṃ Gautamo Gaṇī…”
Pray for the happiness and spiritual progress of all souls.

3. Important small points
- Main thing is bhāv, not speed.
- Pronounce as correctly as you can, but do not worry too much in the beginning.
- If your derāsar or guru has a fixed Chaityavandan book, follow that exact order.
- Digambar tradition does not usually use the word “Chaityavandan” as a fixed vidhi; they do Deva‑pūjā / stotra‑pāṭh. The above method is Śvetāmbara Mūrtipūjak style.
