How to get kewal gyan?
In Jain Dharma, Keval Gyan (Keval Jnān) is the highest, perfect, infinite knowledge – the state of a Siddha and Arihant.
A very important point first: Keval Gyan is not a “technique to learn” – it is the natural, original state of the soul which appears automatically when all karmas are destroyed. So the real question is: “How to destroy karmas so that Keval Gyan manifests?”
I’ll explain in very simple steps.
---
1. Understand what blocks Keval Gyan
The soul already has:
- Infinite knowledge
- Infinite perception
- Infinite bliss
- Infinite energy
But these are covered by karmas, especially:
- Gyanāvarniya karma – blocks knowledge
- Darshanāvarniya karma – blocks perception
- Mohaniya karma – causes attachment/aversion (rāga–dvesha)
- Antarāya karma – blocks energy/effort
When these karmas are fully destroyed, Keval Gyan appears on its own (like the sun appearing when clouds are removed).
---
2. The direct cause of Keval Gyan
Scripturally, Keval Gyan arises at the 13th gunasthanak (spiritual level) for Arihants, when:
- All Ghāti karmas (knowledge-obscuring, perception-obscuring, deluding, energy-obstructing) are destroyed.
So the direct cause is: > Karma-kṣaya – total destruction of ghāti karmas.
But we cannot directly “touch” karma. We work on our inner state; that slowly changes karma.
---
3. What can we actually do?
Jain Dharma gives a clear path. In short:
(A) Right Faith (Samyak Darshan)
Without this, no real spiritual progress.- Deep, unshakable faith in:
How to grow it:
- Sangati (good company of sādhus, shravaks, scriptures)
- Listening to pravachans
- Reflection (manan, chintan)
- Avoiding wrong beliefs and mocking religion.
---
(B) Right Knowledge (Samyak Gyan)
- Studying Jain scriptures according to tradition
- Understanding:
Right knowledge means:
- Correct, non-contradictory, based on Tirthankars’ teachings
- With humility, not ego: “I know everything.”
---
(C) Right Conduct (Samyak Charitra)
This is where karma is stopped and destroyed most strongly. For monks: Mahāvratas (5 great vows) in complete form. For householders: Aṇuvratas (small vows), plus supplementary vows.
Core principles for everyone:
- Ahimsa – non-violence in thought, word, deed
- Reduce anger, hatred, harsh speech - Avoid unnecessary harm to any living being
- Satya – truthfulness
- Asteya (Achaurya) – not stealing
- Brahmacharya – celibacy (for monks); purity/restraint (for householders)
- Aparigraha – non-possessiveness, reduce attachment to things & people
Whenever we live with:
- Less anger, pride, deceit, greed
- More forgiveness, humility, simplicity, contentment
…our karmic bondage reduces.

4. Special practices that purify karma
(1) Samvar – stopping new karmas
- Guarding senses and mind
- Right speech, right livelihood
- Careful, alert behaviour (samiti, gupti)
- Avoiding gossip, criticism, useless talk
(2) Nirjarā – shedding old karmas
Two types:- Akām Nirjarā – happens automatically when karmas mature
- Sakām Nirjarā – deliberate shedding through effort
Main means of Sakām Nirjarā:
- Tapa (12 kinds of austerities) – fasting, limiting food, staying in solitude, meditation, etc.
- Pratikraman – regular repentance for sins of mind, speech, body
- Prayashchit – atonement for done wrongs
- Dhyān (Meditation) – especially Shukla Dhyān at higher stages, which directly leads to Keval Gyan.
---
5. Inner attitude is the key
Even if outer practices are many, the real purifier is inner bhāva (attitude):
- Let go of:
- Cultivate:
The closer we come to pure, detached awareness of the soul, the faster karmas get destroyed.
---
6. Realistic view for a common person
For most of us in this era:
- Goal: Not to “get Keval Gyan tomorrow,” but to:
Keval Gyan is the final fruit of countless lives of:
- Sādhanā (spiritual effort)
- Tapa (austerities)
- Seva (service in right bhāva)
- Tyāg (renunciation)
- Shuddha Upayoga (pure awareness).
---
7. In one simple line
You do not “get” Keval Gyan; you remove karma through Right Faith, Right Knowledge, and Right Conduct – then Keval Gyan shines by itself, just as the sun appears when clouds are gone.
If you want, you can next focus on:
- How to practice daily in simple ways (for a student/working person/householder),
- Detailed explanation of Samyak Darshan or the 14 Gunasthanaks (stages leading to Keval Gyan).
