What principle is shown by the five type of jyotoshi gods?
In Jain Dharma, the five types of Jyotishka (Jyotishi) devas are:
- Surya – Suns
- Chandra – Moons
- Graha – Planets
- Nakshatra – Constellations
- Tārā – Scattered stars ( jainqq.org)
Through them, mainly two Jain principles are shown:
---
1. Principle of Time (Kāl) and Orderly Universe
The movement of these five types of jyotishka devas is what gives:
- day–night,
- tithis and pakshas (fortnights),
- months and seasons,
- years and larger time-cycles. ( jaingpt.org)
So they demonstrate that:
- The universe functions by fixed, natural, beginningless laws (niyati).
- Time is real, eternal and cyclic, and is known through the regular motion of these celestial devas.
---
2. Principle that Even Gods are Bound Souls
Jyotishka devas are:
- Ordinary souls (jīvas) with devagati karma,
- Enjoying great brightness and pleasures, but
- Still bound by karma and must again be born (especially as humans) to attain moksha. ( jainqq.org)
This shows the Jain principle that:
- No god, not even Sun, Moon, or stars, is liberated by default.
- Only right faith, right knowledge and right conduct lead to moksha, not just a high birth.
So, the five types of Jyotishka gods mainly illustrate:
> The Jain concept of real, cyclic time and a law-governed universe, and that even dazzling celestial gods are just transmigrating souls bound by karma.
