    Devi names and meaning

    7 months ago 212

In Jain Dharma, “Devī” usually refers to yakṣinīs (protecting goddesses) and a few other revered śāsan-devīs. Here are some important Jain Devī names with simple meanings:

    1. Cakreśvarī Devī (Chakreshwari)

    - Meaning: “Goddess of the wheel (cakra).” - Role: Śāsan-devī of Bhagwān Ṛṣabhdev (Ādināth). Shown with a chakra (divine disc), symbol of protection and spiritual power.

    1. Ambikā Devī

    - Meaning: “The compassionate mother” (ambā = mother). - Role: Śāsan-devī of Bhagwān Nemināth. Usually shown with children, symbolising care, protection and motherhood.

    1. Padmāvatī Devī

    - Meaning: “She who is adorned with lotus (padma).” - Role: Śāsan-devī of Bhagwān Pārśvanāth. The lotus symbolises purity even in the ‘mud’ of saṃsār.

    1. Sarasvatī Devī (Jain Saraswati)

    - Meaning: “She who is flowing / full of wisdom” (like a river of knowledge). - Role: Devī of knowledge, learning, scriptures, and speech. Shown with Vedas/śāstras and vīṇā in many images, but understood in a Jain way—as the embodiment of right knowledge (samyag-jñān).

    1. Lakṣmī Devī (Jain Lakshmi)

    - Meaning: “She who gives prosperity / auspiciousness.” - Role: Devī of śubh-lābh (pure, ethical prosperity). Often worshipped in connection with Dhan-Teras and other Jain traditions, but always with emphasis on dharmic wealth, not greed.

    1. Jvālāmālinī Devī

    - Meaning: “She who has a garland (mālinī) of flames (jvālā).” - Role: Powerful protective Devī in some Jain tantric traditions, symbolising the burning away of karmas and inner impurities.

    1. Rohiṇī Devī

    - Meaning: Often linked to “red / rising / shining,” symbol of auspicious radiance. - Role: Mentioned as a yakṣinī in some traditions; represents auspiciousness and protection.

    1. Bahuputrikā Devī

    - Meaning: “Mother of many sons/children” (bahu = many, putra = children). - Role: Symbol of abundance, care, and protective motherhood for many beings.

    1. Siddhayikā Devī

    - Meaning: “She who is related to siddhas / perfection / attainment.” - Role: Devī associated with siddhas (liberated souls); reminds devotees of the goal of mokṣa.

    1. Kṣemaprabhā Devī

    - Meaning: “She whose light (prabhā) gives safety, welfare and peace (kṣema).” - Role: Symbolises protection, peace, and spiritual well‑being.

    About Differences in Traditions

    • Digambar and Śvetāmbara traditions may:
    - List slightly different yakṣinīs for some Tīrthaṅkars. - Show different mūrtis (forms) and āyudh (weapons / symbols) in images.
    • But generally, the main spiritual idea is the same:
    - Devīs are not creators of the universe. - They are powerful, but still worldly (saṃsāri) beings. - Worship is done to gain protection, remove obstacles, and strengthen faith in Tīrthaṅkars and the path to mokṣa, not for blind material desires.

If you want, I can list the 24 Tīrthaṅkars with their yakṣinī (Devī) names next, each with a short meaning, in very simple language.
