Is there anything called destiny in Jainism

    7 months ago 202

In Jainism, what people commonly call “destiny” is explained through the law of karma, not by a fixed, blindly decided fate.

    Very simply:

    1. No God deciding your fate

    - There is no creator God in Jainism who writes anyone’s destiny. - Whatever happens to a jiva (soul) is due to its own karmas.

    1. Karma looks like destiny, but it is self‑created

    - Your present body, family, health, wealth, talents, difficulties etc. are the result of previously bound karmas. - Because those karmas must give result once they are bound, this part of life can feel “fixed” – people call that bhagya / destiny. - But Jain view: it is not random fate; it is your own past causes now giving effects.

    1. Purushārtha (self‑effort) is always important

    - Even while past karmas are giving result, you are constantly creating new karma by your present: - thoughts, - intentions (bhāva), - speech and actions. - Through right faith, right knowledge and right conduct, you can change the direction of your future and slowly destroy old karmas. - So Jainism never teaches “just accept destiny and do nothing”.

    1. Punya, pāp and “good/bad destiny”

    - Punya (merit) → pleasant “destiny” (comfort, respect, good birth, etc.). - Pāp (demerit) → painful “destiny” (suffering, obstacles, lower births, etc.). - Both are still bondage; the highest goal is to go beyond both and attain moksha.

    1. Story example – King Shrenik

    - Bhagwan Mahavir told King Shrenik that due to a very intense past himsā (killing a pregnant deer with pride), his hellish birth was fixed – that was his āyuṣya‑karma (life‑span karma) already bound. - This shows: some karmas, once fully fixed, must give result – that part truly cannot be changed. - But apart from such fixed karmas, a lot in our future is still shaped by how we live now.

    1. Summary in one line

    - Jainism does not accept an external, mysterious “destiny”. - It teaches: “Your destiny = the result of your own karmas; your future = in your present effort.”
