In Jainism, “Upadeya” (उपादेय) generally means:

That which should be accepted, adopted, or taken – i.e., what is spiritually beneficial and worth following.

In simple words:

• Upadeya = good qualities, right beliefs, right conduct, and practices that we should take in our life.
• Opposite ideas (wrong belief, violence, dishonesty, intense attachment, etc.) are to be given up, not “upadeya”.

Examples:

• Ahimsa (non‑violence), satya (truth), samyak darshan (right faith) are upadeya – they are to be accepted and practiced.
• Jain scriptures, teachings of Arihant, Siddha, Acharya, Upadhyaya, Sadhu – their true message is upadeya for us.

Both Śvetāmbara and Digambara use the word in this same basic sense – what is spiritually worthy to adopt.
