    Samsan ma paghdi peravi story

    one year ago 77

Jainism holds strong views regarding humility, non-attachment, and the transient nature of life. The story of "Samsan ma paghdi peravi" (wearing a turban in a cremation ground) is a popular parable within Jain culture that teaches about the futility of pride and ego.

    Story Summary:

Once, a proud man always wore a grand turban ("paghdi") to display his status. Even when he went to a cremation ground (samsan) for someone's funeral, he insisted on wearing his turban, wanting to maintain his image. An elder saw this and questioned him: "Why are you so attached to your turban, even in the presence of death, where everything is reduced to ashes?"

The elder explained that the cremation ground is a reminder that all worldly honors, possessions, and status are temporary. The ego (symbolized by the turban) has no value where everyone meets the same end. The lesson is that pride and attachment are meaningless in the face of mortality.

    Jain Philosophy Context:

    • Jainism teaches aparigraha (non-attachment) and anivarya (inevitability of death).
    • The story emphasizes humility and the realization that material things and ego are transient.
    • True spiritual progress comes from letting go of pride and attachments.

Moral: One should not be proud of external symbols of status, as ultimately, all are equal in death. Humility and awareness of the impermanence of worldly things are central to Jain teachings.
