What to do for sleep and be spiritual

    6 months ago 132

To sleep well and remain spiritual, Jain way, focus on three things: (1) What you do in the day (2) What you do before sleep (3) What is in your mind while sleeping

    ---

    1. During the day

These habits make the mind peaceful at night:

    1. Ahimsa in thoughts, words, actions

    - Avoid anger, harsh speech, fights. - Try to stay calm and forgiving. Less krodh, maan, maya, lobh → more peaceful sleep.

    1. Simple and satvik food

    - Avoid overeating, too oily, too spicy food. - Reduce tea/coffee and very heavy food at night. - As per Jain practice, try to avoid eating after sunset (if your health and situation allows). This keeps body light and helps in good sleep and dharmic life.

    1. Limit attachment and stress

    - Do your work honestly, but don’t keep worrying the whole day. - Remember: “I am a pure soul (shuddh atma), all situations are temporary.”

    ---

    2. Before going to sleep

Make a small night routine (10–20 minutes):

    1. Pratikraman / Alochana (Self-reflection)

    - Calmly think: “Whom did I hurt today by mind, speech or body?” - In your heart say: “If I have hurt any living being today, knowingly or unknowingly, I ask for forgiveness.” - This removes heavy feelings from the mind.

    1. Kshamapana (Forgiveness)

    - Forgive all who hurt you. - Mentally say: “I forgive everyone and I request forgiveness from everyone.” - A forgiving heart sleeps deeper and lighter.

    1. Stotra or Mantra

    - Slowly recite Navkar Mantra or any Jain stavan you like. - Focus on the sound and meaning: bowing to Arihant, Siddha, Acharya, Upadhyaya, Sadhu. - This connects your mind to higher spiritual vibrations.

    1. Short meditation (5–10 minutes)

    - Sit or lie down comfortably. - Take slow, deep breaths. - With each exhale, feel tension leaving the body. - You can repeat in mind: “Shuddh Atma Hun” (I am pure soul).

    1. Avoid mobile/TV just before sleep

    - Stop screens at least 30 minutes before bed. - Read a small Jain story or listen to a soft stavan instead.

    ---

    3. While going to sleep

    1. Clean and non-harmful environment

    - Keep your bed area clean, dry, and as far as possible free from insects. - Gently check the bedding so that no small beings are crushed (as per ahimsa-bhav).

    1. Sleep with good bhav (intention)

    - Think: - “May no living being be harmed by me.” - “May I progress on the path of right faith, right knowledge, right conduct.” - If you like, fall asleep while mentally chanting Navkar Mantra.

    1. Let go of the day

    - Whatever happened—success or failure—mentally say: “It was result of past karma. Now I leave it and rest in my true Self.”

    ---

    Important note

If you have serious or long-term sleep problems (insomnia, waking very often, etc.), also consult a doctor. Spiritual practices calm the mind deeply, but medical issues may need medical help too.

    By combining:

    • Ahimsa and simplicity in day,
    • Pratikraman, forgiveness, mantra and meditation at night,
you can improve both your sleep and your spiritual growth together.
