In Jainism what do you do for departed souls moksha?

    6 months ago 106

In Jainism, no one can “give” moksha to a departed soul, and no ritual can change their next birth after they have died.

Moksha depends only on that soul’s own:

    • Right faith (samyak darshan)
    • Right knowledge (samyak jñān)
    • Right conduct (samyak chāritra)

At the moment of death, the jīva immediately takes another birth according to its own bound karma. No prayer, pūjā, or donation can push it to moksha afterward. ( jainknowledge.com)

But you can do many meaningful things in a Jain way:

    1. Accept the truth of the soul

    - Remember: body is perishable, soul is eternal and has only changed its body. - Try to stay calm and detached, avoid loud crying and emotional disturbance.

    1. Forgiveness from the heart

    - From your side, forgive everything and ask forgiveness: - “Michchhāmi Dukkaḍaṁ” – “If I have hurt you in any way, knowingly or unknowingly, please forgive me.” - This purifies your karma and the relationship bhāv (inner feeling). ( jainknowledge.com)

    1. Recite Navkār Mantra & do pratikraman

    - Recite Navkār (Namokār) Mantra with shānti-bhāv. - Do daily pratikraman, reflect on your own faults and purify yourself. - Understand: this does not “transfer” merit to the departed; karma is individual. It refines your own soul. ( jainknowledge.com)

    1. Live dharma in their memory

    - Strengthen ahimsā in diet, speech, and actions. - Take or strengthen small vows (e.g., no night-eating, more care for small jīvas). - Support jīva-dayā (care of animals, poor, sick) and Jain educational / dharma work. - Whatever puṇya you create will benefit you directly; you may remember them with the bhāv: “May all beings progress towards samyak dārshan and moksha.” ( jainknowledge.com)

    1. Keep death rites simple and ahiṁsak

    - Perform simple cremation, avoid show, avoid violence (mass cooking with waste, etc.). - Instead of big feasts “for the soul,” direct that money to meaningful charity and dharma. ( jainknowledge.com)

    1. If death is near (before they pass)

    - Create peaceful, detached atmosphere: soft Navkār, talk of Arihant–Siddha qualities. - Help them to forgive all, let go of attachment, and, if appropriate and already taken under Guru’s guidance, support sallekhanā / santhārā with calmness. ( jainknowledge.com)

    Main Jain points to remember:

    • You cannot pull someone into moksha by rituals or by “doing for their soul.”
    • You can:
    - purify your own soul, - live more dharmic life in their memory, - keep strong vairāgya (detachment) and right understanding about death.
