Shalibhadra was a prominent figure in Jain literature, especially known from the Śalibhadra Chariu, a famous Jain narrative. Vastrapal was Shalibhadra’s father. According to Jain tradition, Vastrapal was a wealthy merchant in the city of Champa (or sometimes referred to as Vardhamāna). He was known for his immense wealth and generosity but, like most householders, was engaged in worldly life.

Shalibhadra, under the influence of Jain monks and the teachings of Lord Mahavira, eventually renounced his luxurious lifestyle to pursue the path of renunciation and spiritual liberation (moksha). His story is often told to exemplify the virtues of detachment, renunciation, and the pursuit of true happiness beyond material wealth—core values in Jainism.
