Bhagwan Naminath’s name has a specific Jain meaning and story behind it.

In Jain tradition:

• “Nami” comes from the root meaning to bow / to pay respect (namaskār, naman).
• When Bhagwan Naminath was in the womb of his mother Queen Viprā Devī, a group of powerful kings came to attack Mithilā.
• The queen was asked to go on the palace terrace and look at the armies.
• Due to the highly pure soul in her womb, the attacking kings’ minds changed – they bowed down, surrendered and paid respect instead of fighting.

Because so many bowed (namaskār) in front of him even before birth, the child was named “Nami” – the one to whom all bow. Hence he is known as Bhagwan Naminath, the 21st Tirthankar of this avasarpinī.
