Is coffe allowed
In Jainism, coffee is generally discouraged and best avoided, especially if you want to follow stricter Jain practice.
Main reasons:
- Ahimsa (non‑violence)
- Coffee is usually made with water that has many tiny living beings (nigod). - Boiling and keeping liquids standing can increase harm to these micro‑organisms. - Stricter Jains try to avoid such avoidable himsa and prefer simple, clean, filtered/boiled water and mild drinks.
- Stimulant / addiction
- Coffee contains caffeine, a strong stimulant. - Jain dharma encourages a calm, controlled, non‑dependent mind. Things that create habit, craving or mental disturbance (like strong stimulants or intoxicants) are avoided. - Regular coffee can easily become a daily dependency (rāga/attachment).
- Traditional practice
- Sadhus and sadhvīs (monks and nuns) do not take coffee or tea at all. - Many serious householders in both Śvetāmbara and Digambar traditions also avoid tea/coffee. - Some lay Jains still drink coffee out of habit; this is a lenient practice, not the ideal.
So, is it “allowed”?
- Scriptures do not mention “coffee” by name (it is a later product).
- But applying Jain principles, the saṃyam (more disciplined) path is: don’t drink coffee.
- If someone still takes it:
If you are trying to follow Jain principles more seriously, the best and safest answer is: avoid coffee.
