Can we go to temple during periods?

    6 months ago 192

In Jain tradition, the usual answer is:

No, during periods you should not go inside the Jain temple (derasar) or do formal pūjā.

    What traditional Jain practice says

Especially in more orthodox Jain families:

    • Women on periods generally do not:
    - Enter the garbhagṛih / main temple - Touch idols, pañchāng pūjā samagri, religious books, or yantras - Do formal pūjā, abhiṣek, aarti, or take religious vows / vrats

This is based on the idea of ritual purity for worship, not that the woman herself is “bad” or “sinful.” Menstruation is seen as a natural bodily process, but any active discharge (blood, etc.) is treated as a state where one avoids direct participation in temple rituals.

    A simple way to remember:

    • Temple rituals, touching murtis, doing pūjā – avoid.
    • Rest, keep calm, and resume normal worship after periods are over.

    What you can do

Most Jain elders and teachers are comfortable with women during periods:

    • Doing śuddh bhāv-bhakti from home (mentally remembering Tīrthankars)
    • Listening quietly to pravachan or doing simple nām–smaraṇ (if your family tradition allows)

Practices can differ by sect (Śvetāmbara / Digambara), city, and family tradition, so:

    • Follow your family and guru’s guidance.
    • If in doubt on a yātrā or special day, you can stay outside the main temple hall and do silent bhakti from there, if your elders agree.
