What iz the jain equivalent of ramadan?
In Jainism, there is no exact equivalent of Ramadan.
Ramadan is a specific Islamic month of fasting, fixed in their religious calendar. Jain Dharma has many forms of fasting and special spiritual periods, but none are a “Jain Ramadan.” Still, people sometimes compare Ramadan with these Jain observances:
- Paryushan / Das Lakshan Parva
- The holiest annual festival for Jains. - Śvetāmbars usually say Paryushan (8–10 days); Digambars usually say Das Lakshan Parva (10 days). - Focus: - A lot of upvās (fasting) and other tapas - Pratikraman (repentance), asking forgiveness – “Micchāmi Dukkaḍam” - Deep self‑control, non‑violence, and purification of karma. - Because of strong focus on fasting and repentance, many people loosely think of it as “similar” to Ramadan in spirit.
- Ayambil Oli / Navpad Oli
- A 9‑day period, observed twice a year. - People do Ayambil tap (one very simple, tasteless meal a day) and worship the Navpad (nine supremacies). - It is a strong tapas period, but again, not an exact parallel to Ramadan. - You can read more here
In summary:
- Islam: one fixed month – Ramadan.
- Jainism: no single “month like Ramadan”, but several powerful fasting festivals, especially Paryushan / Das Lakshan and Ayambil Oli, where Jains focus on fasting, repentance, and spiritual growth.
