    What is varghoda

    6 months ago 371

Varghoda (often written “Varghodo” / “Varghoda Yatra”) is a religious procession in Jain tradition.

    In simple words:

    • It is a shobha yatra (parade) taken out with Bhagwan’s idol, or a tapasvi (one who has done great tapa), or a deeksharthi (person about to take diksha), or sometimes in marriage for the groom.
    • People walk together with bhakti, singing Navkar Mantra, stavans, and doing Jai‑Jaikaar.
    • There may be rath (chariot/palkhi), band, flags, and devotees showering flowers.
    • Main purpose is to spread the glory of Jain Dharma and give darshan to everyone on the way, with full shraddha and maryada (discipline).

Some common types in Jain society:

    1. Bhagwan ka Varghoda / Rath‑Yatra

    - Idol of a Tirthankar is placed in a beautifully decorated rath. - Taken through the town so people can have darshan.

    1. Tapasvi Varghoda

    - For a shravak/shravika who completed long fasts (like 8‑day, 11‑day, 30‑day, etc.). - Society honours them for their tapascharya.

    1. Deeksharthi Varghoda

    - Before taking Jain diksha, the deeksharthi is taken in a procession. - They distribute or give up worldly things as a symbol of vairagya.

    1. Vivah (Wedding) Varghoda

    - Groom’s procession going to the bride’s place. - In Jain Vivah, this is also called Varghoda and is done with Jain mantras and maryada.

In Gujarati/Hindi spoken language, people say “Varghoda”, but in scriptures it is basically the Rathyatra / Chaitya‑yatra type of religious procession done with devotion, not for show.
