In Jain cosmology, time is divided into six eras (ārās) that repeat in a cyclical manner. The 5th āra (duḥṣamā) is considered to be a period of sorrow and spiritual decline, which follows the current 4th āra (duḥṣamā-sūṣamā).

According to Jain scriptures, especially in the context of the current avasarpinī (descending half-cycle), during the 5th āra, no Tirthankaras, Kevalis (omniscients), or true yugpradhan monks will exist. This era is described as a time when the teachings of the Tirthankaras (Jinavāṇī) will have completely disappeared, and spiritual practices will greatly decline. As a result, the concept of a "yugpradhan monk" (the chief monk or spiritual leader of the era) does not apply to the 5th āra, since spiritual leadership and the presence of true monks are said to cease in this period.
