Who revised Haribhadra Suri's time period and how it happened

    6 months ago 121

Traditionally, Jain acharyas and pattāvalī-granths placed Acharya Haribhadra Suri in the 5th–6th century CE, around 459–529 CE (Vikram Samvat ~515–585), based mainly on later narrative traditions.

The major modern revision of his time period was done by:

Muni Jinavijayaji (Jinavijaya Muni) in 1919.

    What Jinavijayaji did

    1. Studied Haribhadra’s own books carefully

He showed that Haribhadra: - quotes and discusses Buddhist thinker Dharmakīrti and others who are clearly later than the 6th century - refers to certain texts and ideas that only appear in India after the traditional 459–529 CE dates

    1. Compared with other Jain and non‑Jain authors

    - Later Jain authors (like Uddyotana Suri of Kuvalayamālā, etc.) speak of Haribhadra in ways that fit much better with an 8th‑century date. - This makes it historically impossible for Haribhadra to have lived as early as Vikram Samvat 585.

    1. Conclusion of Jinavijayaji

    - Haribhadra Suri must be placed roughly in the 8th century CE, usually given as c. 700–770 CE. - After his 1919 study, both Jain and Western scholars largely accepted this “late” dating.

    Result

    • Old traditional date: about 459–529 CE (6th century)
    • Revised scholarly date (after Jinavijayaji’s work): about 700–770 CE (8th century)

So, the person who revised Haribhadra Suri’s time period in a decisive, scholarly way was Muni Jinavijayaji, and he did so by showing, from Haribhadra’s own writings and from historical comparisons, that the traditional early date was impossible and that an 8th‑century date fits the evidence.
