Why are we jains
We are Jains for much more than just a “label” or “birth identity.”
In simple words:
- Because our real nature (soul) is peace and purity
- Jain dharma teaches: “I am a soul, not just this body, name, caste or religion.” - The soul’s true qualities are: knowing, seeing, happiness, and energy. - Jain path helps us uncover these qualities by reducing anger, ego, greed, and deceit.
- Because we want to stop hurting others (Ahimsa)
- Every living being has a soul like us, wanting happiness and fearing pain. - Eating carefully, speaking gently, and living mindfully reduce violence (himsa). - This makes our heart lighter and our karma softer.
- Because we want to reduce attachment and greed (Aparigraha)
- More and more things never give real peace. - Jainism teaches contentment: using what we need, avoiding waste, sharing with others. - Less attachment = less fear, less jealousy, less stress.
- Because we want to see many sides of truth (Anekantvad)
- Jain view: “My opinion is from one angle, not the whole truth.” - This creates tolerance, less fighting, more understanding in family and society. - We learn to say, “From this viewpoint you are right, and from that viewpoint I am right.”
- Because we want to improve our karma and future lives
- Every thought, word, and action binds karma to the soul. - Good conduct (samyak darshan, gyan, charitra) slowly cleans this karma. - Being Jain means consciously choosing a life that reduces bad karma and increases right vision.
- Because we are walking towards liberation (Moksha)
- Final goal of Jain dharma is not heaven, wealth, or success. - It is complete freedom from all karma: no birth, no death, pure infinite bliss. - Tirthankars have walked this path and shown us the way through vows and disciplines.
- Because our tradition guides us daily
- Namokar Mantra, pratikraman, fasting, charity, self-control – these are tools to purify the soul. - Parents, gurus, and scriptures give us a ready-made path of spiritual practice.
- Even if we are “Jain by birth,” we must become “Jain by choice”
- Being born in a Jain family is good fortune, but not enough. - The real question is: - Do I live ahimsa? - Do I control my anger and tongue? - Do I try to reduce attachments? - When we practice this, we are truly Jains in the eyes of our own soul.
So, we are Jains because Jain dharma matches the deepest truth of our soul:
- Don’t hurt others.
- Don’t cling too much.
- See many viewpoints.
- Clean karma.
- Move step by step towards inner freedom and lasting peace.
