How did Shrenik Raja get Samyaktva? That too Kshayik Samyaktva?

    6 months ago 119

In Jain scriptures two separate points are discussed about King Shrenik:

    1. Did he get Samyaktva (right faith)?
    2. Was it specifically Kṣāyik Samyaktva (permanent, by total destruction of Darśan-mohanīya karma)?

    These are not the same.

    ---

    1. About King Shrenik’s Samyaktva

All Jain traditions agree on these basic facts:

    • King Shrenik was a great devotee of Bhagwan Mahavir.
    • He had deep śraddhā (faith) in Mahavir and Jain Dharma.
    • Because of that, he became Samyag-dṛṣṭi (a right believer) in that life.
    • Still, earlier bound karmas (especially hell-āyuṣya karma from his violent hunting incident) could not be undone, so he must first go to hell, and after that he will progress and ultimately become a Tirthankar named Mahāpadma in the next Utsarpiṇī. ( jainknowledge.com)

So: Yes, Shrenik Raja did attain Samyaktva (right faith) in his life as a king.

    ---

    2. Was his Samyaktva specifically Kṣāyik?

    From Jain karma theory:

    • Samyaktva can be of 3 main types (simplifying):
    1. Kṣāyik Samyaktva – permanent; mithyātva (false belief) is totally destroyed. 2. Kṣayopśamik Samyaktva – mixed; partly destroyed and partly suppressed. 3. Upśamik Samyaktva – temporary; mithyātva is only suppressed.
    • Kṣāyik Samyaktva is never lost again in any future birth.
    • But, even with Kṣāyik Samyaktva, already‑bound āyuṣya (life-span) karmas must still give their fruit.
    - So a soul can be a right believer and still take a hell birth, if that āyuṣya was bound earlier. - That hell birth will then be as a samyag-dṛṣṭi jīva in hell.

    For King Shrenik specifically:

    • Scriptures clearly say:
    - He was samyag-dṛṣṭi. - He had hell-āyuṣya karma already bound (due to the arrogant joy after killing the pregnant deer). ( jainknowledge.com) - After that hell life, step by step, he will attain such purity that he will become a Tirthankar (Mahāpadma) in a future era. ( jainknowledge.com)
    • But Agamas and standard stories do not explicitly label:
“Shrenik attained Kṣāyik Samyaktva in that very life of King Shrenik.”
    • Because of this, Jain ācāryas discuss it in two broad ways:

    1. View 1 (more cautious): - Shrenik definitely had Samyaktva, but whether it was Kṣāyik or Kṣayopśamik in that very birth is not explicitly stated. - His final Kṣāyik Samyaktva will be in the last human birth just before becoming Tirthankar Mahāpadma.

    2. View 2 (theological possibility, not directly scriptural wording): - Since he is destined to be a future Tirthankar, in his chain of births he must at some point attain Kṣāyik Samyaktva. - It is possible that even as King Shrenik he had Kṣāyik Samyaktva, and only earlier‑bound āyuṣya karma forced the hell birth. - But again, the texts do not clearly, directly say “King Shrenik obtained Kṣāyik Samyaktva in this very life.”

Because the scriptures are clear about his being samyag-dṛṣṭi, but not explicit about the sub‑type, responsible teachers usually do not claim with certainty: “Shrenik Raja definitely had Kṣāyik Samyaktva in that life.”

    ---

    3. So how did he get Samyaktva at all?

In simple terms, as per Jain doctrine, Samyaktva arises when:

    • One comes in close association with a true Tirthankar or his true disciples.
    • One listens to śuddha Deshnā (pure sermon) with vinay (reverence), aprāmāda (alertness) and bhāv-purity.
    • Due to strong Punya and right internal attitude, the Darśan-mohanīya karma (that causes wrong belief) is destroyed or at least suppressed.

    For King Shrenik:

    • He spent long periods in the presence of Bhagwan Mahavir.
    • He had deep devotion, questions about his soul’s future, and serious reflection when Mahavir told him about his hell destiny. ( jainknowledge.com)
    • This shock + repentance + strong faith is exactly the kind of inner turn that produces Samyaktva.

So, “How did he get Samyaktva?”

    > By coming into direct contact with Bhagwan Mahavir, listening to his teachings with deep faith, reflecting seriously on his own karmic state (especially after hearing of his hell destiny), repenting his past violence, and firmly accepting the true nature of soul, karma, and the path of liberation. > This inner transformation removed (or at least deeply weakened) his Darśan-mohanīya karma and made him samyag-dṛṣṭi.

    ---

    4. Direct answer to your question

    • Did Shrenik Raja get Samyaktva?
Yes. He became a right believer (samyag-dṛṣṭi) disciple of Bhagwan Mahavir.
    • Did he definitely get Kṣāyik Samyaktva in that same life?
Jain scriptures do not clearly and explicitly state that. They clearly describe his Samyaktva and his future Tirthankar status, but are silent on the exact sub‑type of Samyaktva in that particular birth.
    • Can his future Tirthankarhood happen without Kṣāyik Samyaktva?
No. To finally become a Tirthankar Mahāpadma, his soul must attain Kṣāyik Samyaktva at some stage (most likely in his last human birth before that Tirthankar birth).

So, the safe and authentic Jain answer is:

    > King Shrenik was a samyag-dṛṣṭi devotee of Bhagwan Mahavir and is destined to become Tirthankar Mahāpadma in the next Utsarpiṇī. > Whether the Samyaktva in his life as King Shrenik was already Kṣāyik or only Kṣayopśamik is not explicitly stated in the scriptures, so we should not assert it as a fact.
