    different jain literatures in sanskrit

    6 months ago 116

Here is a very simple overview of important Jain literature in Sanskrit (not Prakrit) and the main types:

    ---

    1. Common to both traditions (Digambar & Śvetāmbara)

    Tattvārtha Sūtra (Tattvārthādhigama Sūtra)

    • Author: Ācārya Umāsvāti/Umāsvāmi
    • Language: Sanskrit
    • Content: Complete summary of Jain philosophy – soul, karma, cosmology, vows, path to moksha.
    • Accepted as authoritative in both Digambar and Śvetāmbara traditions.

    ---

    2. Śvetāmbara Sanskrit literature

Mostly these are later than the original Āgamas (which are mainly in Prakrit), but very important:

    (a) Commentaries on Āgamas

Sanskrit explanations (bhāṣya, vṛtti, ṭīkā) on Prakrit Āgamas, e.g.
    • Ācārāṅga Sūtra commentaries
    • Sūtrakṛtāṅga, Uttarādhyayana, etc.
They explain the meaning of Lord Mahāvīra’s teachings in systematic Sanskrit.

    (b) Philosophical & Yogic works

    • Yogaśāstra – by Ācārya Hemacandra (partly Prakrit, partly Sanskrit), on ethics, yoga, and spiritual discipline.

    (c) Historical / narrative Sanskrit works

    • Triṣaṣṭi-śalākā-puruṣa-caritra – by Ācārya Hemacandra
    - Life stories of the 63 great persons (Tīrthaṅkaras, Cakravartins, etc.) of Jain history.
    • Various Jain purāṇas and caritras written in Sanskrit verse to teach dharma through stories.

    ---

    3. Digambar Sanskrit literature

Original Digambar canonical bases (like Ṣaṭkhaṇḍāgama) are in Prakrit, but many key works and commentaries are in Sanskrit.

    (a) Doctrinal & philosophical texts

    • Ratnakaraṇḍa-śrāvakācāra – layperson’s code of conduct.
    • Dravya‑saṅgraha – short text on the 9 tattvas and categories of reality (verses in mixed Sanskrit/Prakrit style, usually studied via Sanskrit commentaries).

    (b) Sanskrit Purāṇas and epics

Retell universal history and great lives in Jain way, e.g.
    • Padma Purāṇa (Padmapurāṇa) – by Ācārya Raviṣeṇa (Jain Rāmāyaṇa in Sanskrit).
    • Harivaṃśa‑Purāṇa, Ādi‑Purāṇa, Mahā‑Purāṇa (Jinasena, Guṇabhadra and others) – lives of Tīrthaṅkaras and other great beings, in Sanskrit epic style.

    (c) Commentarial literature in Sanskrit

    • Commentaries on Ṣaṭkhaṇḍāgama, Kaṣāyapāhuda, and Kunda‑kunda’s Prakrit works (like Samayasāra, Pravacanasāra, etc.) are mainly in Sanskrit, explaining deep philosophy.

    ---

    4. Stotra (devotional hymns) in Sanskrit

These are very popular among all Jains:

    • Bhaktāmar Stotra – by Ācārya Maṇatuṅga, in praise of Lord Ṛṣabhadeva (Ādinātha).
    • Many other Sanskrit stotras on Tīrthaṅkaras, siddhas, ācāryas, etc., used in daily pūjā and recitation.

    ---

    5. Jain works on grammar and other sciences in Sanskrit

Jain ācāryas also contributed to Sanskrit grammar, metrics, etc., e.g.

    • Siddha‑hema‑śabdānuśāsana – by Ācārya Hemacandra, a major Sanskrit grammar used even outside Jain circles.

    ---

    Summary

When we say “Jain literature in Sanskrit”, we mainly mean:

    1. Core philosophical sūtras – especially Tattvārtha Sūtra.
    2. Sanskrit commentaries on Prakrit Āgamas (Śvetāmbara) and on Digambar Prakrit scriptures.
    3. Historical / purāṇic epics like Padma Purāṇa, Ādi‑Purāṇa, Triṣaṣṭi‑śalākā‑puruṣa‑caritra.
    4. Devotional stotras like Bhaktāmar.
    5. Scholarly works (grammar, logic, etc.) authored by Jain ācāryas.

If you want, you can now pick any one of these (for example Tattvārtha Sūtra or Bhaktāmar) and I can explain it in more detail, very simply.
