How to do Sidhi tap?
Siddhi Tap is a special niyam‑purvak tapa (disciplined penance) done under guidance of a Guru or learned Jain elder. Because the exact pattern (kitne din, kaunsi bhakti, kaunsa upvās/ekāsan) changes according to sangh, upashray, or guru, I will not fix a strict timetable here. Instead, I’ll explain the safe and traditional way to do it.
---
1. Take proper pachchakkhān (vrat resolution)
Before starting:
- Go to your Guru / Sadhu / Sadhvi / Pravachankār or, if not available, in front of:
- Jin Mandir (Tirthankar’s idol), or - Siddhachakra / Navpad, or - Shastra (Jain scriptures).
- With folded hands take a clear vow, for example:
- For how many days you will do Siddhi Tap. - What food rule you will follow (upvās, ekāsan, bēsān, boiled water only till sunset, etc.). - Which faults you will avoid (raudra bhāv, mithyā vāni, mobile/TV timepass, gossip, etc.).
Say clearly (aloud or mentally): “I am taking Siddhi Tap for the purpose of self‑purification and spiritual progress, not for worldly show or miracles.”
---
2. Fix clear food & water niyam
Typical Siddhi Taps include a mix of:
- Upvās (full fast – only boiled water within fixed time), and/or
- Ekāsan / Bēsān (eating once or twice, sitting in one place, very simple food),
- With boiled water only, usually between sunrise and sunset.
Because patterns differ (some 9‑day, some 11‑day, some 13‑day etc.), ask your Guru/elder:
- “Which exact pattern of fasts should I keep for Siddhi Tap?”
- “Till what time may I drink boiled water?”
Then follow that exactly every day.
---
3. Daily routine during Siddhi Tap
Try to keep these daily:
- Morning
- Snān, clean clothes, tilak if your tradition uses it. - Navkār Mantra jap with full dhyān. - If your tradition connects Siddhi Tap with Siddhachakra / Navpad, do: - Navpad vandan, - Stavan/Stotra (e.g., Navkarvali, Uvasaggaharam, Logassa etc., as your guru advises).
- Daytime
- Avoid: - Krodh, mān, māyā, lobh - Gossip, social media, unnecessary talking. - Do: - Swādhyāy (reading / listening to Jain granth, pravachan). - Pratikraman of the faults done in mind, speech, body that day. - Jap of Navkār Mantra or any Jain mantra given by your Guru.
- Evening
- Samayik / pratikraman if possible. - Alochanā / Pratyākhyān: accept your mistakes of the day and renew your vow for next day. - Sleep with shubha bhāv (no negative thoughts, no planning of himsā or deceit).
---
4. Mental attitude (bhāv) during Siddhi Tap
Siddhi Tap ka mūl “bhāv” hai:
- “Main apne kashāyon ko kam karne ke liye yeh tap kar raha/rahi hoon.”
- No desire of labh, prabhāv, siddhi, chamatkār, or show‑off.
- Maintain:
If body becomes weak, do not secretly break vow. Go honestly to Guru/elder and change the niyam with proper pachchakkhān. Breaking secretly creates heavy pap.
---
5. Last day (Udyāpan‑like bhāv)
On the last day of Siddhi Tap (according to your fixed count):
- Do special:
- Jin Puja / Chaitya‑vandan / Abhishek (as per your tradition). - Extra Navkār jap and kshamā‑yāchanā: - For any faults during the days of tapa.
- If you had promised:
- Dāna (e.g., bhojan to sadhus, sahiyog to upashray/derasar, books/food to poor), then complete that with vinay and without show‑off.
- Offer bhāv:
- “Jo punya is Siddhi Tap se bandha ho, ve sab moksha‑marg ki pragati ke liye ho.”
---
6. Health & guidance
- If you have medical conditions, very young age, old age, always do Siddhi Tap only with Guru or doctor’s guidance.
- Jain dharma never supports self‑harm.

Summary
To do Siddhi Tap in a safe and dharmic way:
- Take proper pachchakkhān from Guru / in front of Jinendra.
- Fix clear rules of upvās / ekāsan / water.
- Fill the days with Navkār, swādhyāy, samayik, pratikraman.
- Keep pure bhāv of kashāy‑kshaya and moksha‑marg, not show or miracles.
- Complete it with kshamā‑yāchanā and simple, non‑showy dāna.
Exact pattern of days and fasts for “Siddhi Tap” may differ in your sangh, so the most authentic way is to ask your own Guru / Pravachankar and follow the vidhi they give you.
