Adhar Abhisheks in english
“Adhar Abhishek” is most likely “Adhar Pāpsthān / Pāpshath Sutra” – the list of 18 main sins (paap) for which we ask forgiveness. Here is the simple English meaning of all 18:
- Prāṇātipāt – Violence / killing
Harming or killing any living being (by body, speech or mind).
- Mṛiṣhāvād – Lying
Speaking untruth, cheating, hiding truth to deceive others.
- Adattādān – Stealing
Taking anything not given, in any way (openly or secretly).
- Maithun – Sexual misconduct
Uncontrolled sensuality, adultery, or wrong use of sexuality.
- Parigraha – Possessiveness / accumulation
Having and desiring excess possessions, people, status, etc.
- Krodh – Anger
Getting angry, wishing harm, losing peace of mind.
- Mān – Pride / ego
Feeling “I am great, I am higher than others”, arrogance.
- Māyā – Deceit
Showing something outside, thinking something else inside; tricking others.
- Lobh – Greed
Never being satisfied, always wanting more things, money, power, etc.
- Rāg – Attachment
Clinging to people, objects, ideas – “I cannot live without this.”
- Dveṣh – Hatred
Dislike, jealousy, wanting to hurt or see others suffer.
- Kalah – Quarrelling
Fighting, arguing, disturbing peace in family, society, sangh.
- Abhyākhyān – False blaming / justifying oneself
Blaming others to hide one’s own fault, giving excuses instead of admitting mistake.
- Paiśhunya – Backbiting / spreading faults
Carrying tales from one person to another, breaking relations by gossip.
- Rati–arati – Wrong likes and dislikes
Liking wrong things and disliking good/spiritual things; getting disturbed if you don’t get what you like.
- Para-parivāda – Criticising other paths or people
Condemning, insulting, or making fun of other religions, gurus, or people.
- Māyā-mṛiṣhāvād – Deceitful lying
A lie spoken with extra cunning and planning, to cheat in a deep way.
- Mithyātva-śalya – Thorn of wrong belief
Having wrong belief about soul, karma, and Tirthankars; not trusting true Dharma – this becomes a “thorn” in the soul.

- The list and basic meanings of these 18 paaps are accepted in both Digambar and Shwetambar traditions.
- Words or order may differ slightly in some books, but the substance is the same: we recognise these 18 as main doors through which bad karma enters, and we ask forgiveness for them in pratikraman and other sutras.
