literary works of jain in prakrit

    6 months ago 112

Jain literature in Prakrit is very rich and spread over many centuries. In simple form, you can remember it in three broad groups:

    ---

    1. Canonical scriptures (Āgams) – mainly in Ardhamāgadhī Prakrit

Especially in the Śvetāmbara tradition, the early Jain canon is in Ardhamāgadhī Prakrit. Examples:

    • Aṅa Āgams (Angas) – e.g.
    - Ācārāṅga Sūtra (monk conduct, life of Mahāvīr) - Sūtrakṛtāṅga - Uttarādhyayana Sūtra - Antagaḍadasāo / Antakrddasha Sūtra (stories of souls attaining moksha) ( jainknowledge.com)
    • Other Āgams – Upāṅga, Chedasūtra, Mūlasūtra, Prakīrṇaka etc., also mainly in Ardhamāgadhī. ( jainknowledge.com)

These texts give core Jain philosophy, vows, conduct rules, karma theory, and many stories of sādhu–sādhvīs and śrāvaks/śrāvikās.

    ---

    2. Prakrit stotras and devotional texts

Many early hymns and small sutras used in daily practice are also in Prakrit, for example:

    • Logassa Sutra / Chaturviṁśati-stavan – praise of 24 Tīrthankars, in Ardhamāgadhī Prakrit. ( jainknowledge.com)
    • Various pachkhan (vows) and short bhaktis, e.g. Ekasana pachkhan, in simple Jain Prakrit used for lay vows. ( jainknowledge.com)

These are mostly short, easy verses for recitation and daily anushthān.

    ---

    3. Non-canonical Jain works in different Prakrits

Jain authors also wrote many narrative and poetic works in other Prakrit dialects:

    • Paumacariya (Paumacariyu) – an early Jain Rāmāyaṇa in Prakrit, attributed to Āchārya Vimalasūri (Digambar tradition). ( jainknowledge.com)
    • Other narrative, cosmological, and doctrinal texts in Śaurasenī, Māhārāṣṭrī and related Jain Prakrits, especially in Digambar tradition (e.g. Mulācāra, Kaṣāyapāhuda type literature). ( jainknowledge.com)

These works retell the lives of Tīrthankars, śalākā-puruṣas, and great śrāvaks, and explain Jain ethics and cosmology in story form.

    ---

Language summary (for Jain Prakrit literature)

    • Main scriptural language: Ardhamāgadhī Prakrit (core Āgams). ( jainknowledge.com)
    • Other Jain Prakrits: Śaurasenī, Māhārāṣṭrī etc. in later texts, especially narratives and poetry.
    • Later on, many Jain works also appear in Sanskrit and regional languages, but the earliest and core layer is Prakrit.

    ---

If you want, I can next:

    • list specific important Prakrit texts with 1–2 line descriptions, or
    • show you sample lines in Prakrit with simple meaning (arth) to see the style.
