    how to bathe

    6 months ago 200

In Jain Dharma, स्नान (bathing) is not only for body cleanliness, but also for साधना (spiritual discipline). Here is a very simple, practical way to bathe, with Jain principles in mind:

    1. Right intention (भाव) first

    - Before going to bathe, take a moment and think: “I am cleaning this body so that it can be used for धर्म, not for show or attachment.”

    1. Use water carefully (अहिंसा + अपरीग्रह)

    - Do not waste water; keep the flow low. - Avoid extremely hot water – it harms more जीव (micro-organisms). - Traditional Jain practice: use only as much water as really needed.

    1. Check & filter water if possible

    - If practical, use filtered water (cloth / fine mesh) so that visible जीव in water are not harmed. - Do not throw dirty water where living beings will surely be harmed (like on plants in strong soap, or on small insects).

    1. Gentle cleaning of the body

    - Wet the body. - Use a small quantity of gentle soap (too many chemicals = more जीव हिंसा in production and more अहार for microorganisms). - Clean: - Face, neck, ears - Arms, underarms - Chest, back - Private parts (carefully and cleanly) - Legs, feet - Rinse well so no soap remains.

    1. Mindfulness and modesty

    - Be modest in dress and behaviour while bathing. - Avoid singing/imagining sensual things – keep the mind calm and साधक‑like. - You can mentally recite “णमो अरिहंताणं…” or any छोटा नवकार while bathing.

    1. Drying and dressing

    - Gently dry the body with a clean towel. - Wear clean, simple and modest clothes (साधगी). - Remember: cleanliness is a support for साधना, not for ego.

    1. Frequency

    - घर-गृहस्थ normally bathe at least once daily (or as per health/climate), particularly before पूजा, स्वाध्याय, समायिक etc. - Try to avoid very late‑night bathing unless needed, as night‑time has more सूक्ष्म जीव according to Jain texts.

In summary: Bathe with कम पानी, कम हिंसा, कम आसक्ति, और अधिक सजगता. This makes a simple daily स्नान into a small spiritual practice.
